What a wonderful thing for her to do.

A friend over east had a baby who developed a heart condition when he was 9 months. He had to have a Berlin heart while waiting for a transplant. My friend found it very difficult to reconcile that fact that for her baby to have a chance to live, another must die. Her bub had been in hospital for 10 months when she got the call at home very early in the morning - we have a heart for Logan. 7 months on and Logan's home, happy and healthy. My friend knows how lucky she was and she'll never forget that the mum and dad who lost their baby, despite their grief, gave Logan the most precious gift.

Here in BE it's opt-in by default, but there's probably going to be some time lag involved, so just to be sure, we've had our ID card chips updated to ensure donation of any bits that can be possibly used as spares for others are harvested as soon as possible.

On a slightly lighter note, my liver will probably end up being used for research purposes.

I have been signed up to be a deceased donor for as long as I have been eligible.

They don't put a sticker on drivers licence here anymore, hospitals once death is imminent with no hope of recovery contact BC Transplant who maintains the list, if the person is registered the hospital is provided with the documentation so doctors/hospitals can notify the family.

When I had to renew my licence last April they automatically hand out donation card, so they are actively trying to get more people to sign up as donors.

I'd consider being a living donor for kidney or liver if I was a match and suitable. I have been tested a couple times for bone marrow needs, but never a match.

Unfortunately some countries will not accept Brits, if they have lived in the UK between certain dates, for blood/organ donations due to Mad Cow Disease.

Yes, I had a problem with this in concern to blood donation. I wasn’t physically in the UK during that time, but every time I gave blood here (7 or 8 times) it became an issue so I have stopped.

Unfortunately not everyone qualifies as a donor. I, for one, cannot even donate blood because of having had cancer so being a parts donor is out of the question. My former boss donated one of her kidneys to her daughter. The surgeons botched the original operation on both the daughter and the mom and mom has been in terrible pain ever since and daughter is back on the list for a new kidney. Having had one transplant already, she is not considered high in need.

Having had cancer doesn't automatically mean one cannot donate blood. It's very possible for people who have had cancer to still donate, depending on what kind of cancer it was and how long its been. So while you may not be able to donate due to have had cancer it doesn't mean others cannot, American Red Cross allows cancer survivors to donate provided its been at least 1 year since treatment and the cancer has not come back.

https://www.cancer.org/treatment/tre...survivors.html

Even if donating whole blood isn't an option, might still be possible to donate parts of blood such as platelets if one has had cancer.

https://www.redcross.org/about-us/ne...-donation.html

Also still possible to donate organs if one has had cancer and depending on health of donor at time of their death, how long they were cancer free, their organs may still be viable for donation and its recommended those who wish to donate even if they had cancer still register as a donor.
