I've always thought that the death penalty would be best applied to people who actually do impact our lives, burglars, people who dump garbage by the side of the road, vandals etc. I dare say Mr Magnotta should be locked up for the rest of his life but at the end of the day he hasn't done anything to me.
There's always this argument about the deterrent effect, well the death penalty isn't likely to put off some nutcase like Magnotta, but I'm pretty sure there would be less vandalism if the penalty for it was hanging.
Hmm, where is Thomas De Quincey when we need him?

That seems to be how modern society works, if it doesn't affect me, I dont care and I dont want to pay for it mentality.

That's what makes for a "lawless" society (I think you meant an out of control society, as after all people make laws).
Me having sympathy for the guy he killed makes not one jot of difference to anything.
Face reality - TV news is primarily an entertainment medium, how many hours have they filled up with this guy, how many with the people killed on the roads in the last couple of weeks, or the burglaries in your neighbourhood? Not "newsworthy" enough, although it is news and has more relevance to our lives.
(And clearly you didn't get the Thomas De Quincey reference).

Not sure if this is new news as of this morning but it appears the authorities are looking for links between Magnotta and this guy:
