The third reported case of The Virus announced today in France. One in Lyon. One in Paris. IDK where the recent one is. :(

Corn bread and beans, good idea. Also oatmeal is good, potatoes can be a basic food for a while also.

If you were in Canada, you would know that there's no point in trying to avoid people who have recently been to China, lots of people have recently been to China.

Where did I say avoid any people at all?

The building I live in in france here is in an extremely dense urban neighborhood where in my building alone are several Chinese students. My neighborhood is so multicultural compared to anything in Canada I ever saw it is lieterally over the top and very multiracial, with many africans, some muslim, some christian africans.
Just to let you know that I couldn't be attacked for saying people could stay away from Chinese.
Still don't know how you got that?
Maybe you mis quoted. Was it someone else who wrote that?

I myself didn't see anybody writing that.

Surgical masks are flying off the shelves, stores can't keep them in stock here.

I wouldn't be surprised if the virus is already in the Vancouver area but just not known yet, appears people not showing symptoms can still spread it, and in mild cases is very similiar to a cold so someone infected and only showing mild symptoms may not seek medical assistance and continue their daily activities.

Based on the age range in that article seems over 55 crowd are the most likely to die.

With 20 something flights a day to/from China from YVR, its only a matter of time before it is here, it's already in Washington state so already in the region.

I inferred it from the idea of hiding in the basement with corn bread and beans. If that's not to avoid people then I apologize.

You must be refering to someone elses post. I did mention potatoes, not basements though.

I have no basement, I live in a flat.

Three confirmed cases in France now. Two in Paris, one in Bordeaux according to the WHO.

I don't know what happened to the news reported case in LYON unless it was that lady who got by the health security at the airport coming into France.
Maybe after they caught up with her she didn't have the corona virus even if she did get by the fever detector intentionally by using fever reduction pills and then bragged about it to people who reported her then when they tested her it was some other flu? IDK wot happened there?

Magnumpty suggested hiding at home, he's in suburban Canada so likely has a basement. Tubbleweedy supported the approach. I intended to take a poke at both of them as, in my view, avoiding people who look as if they've been to China is a dangerous road to go down and, anyway, isn't likely to reduce the miniscule risk of catching the disease. I gave up on it because explaining that the basement could be virtual and it was the concept of hiding at home (whether literally bunkering or not) that I found problematic was becoming hard work.

I expect everyone has caught the virus and died by now so it's doubly flogging a dead horse to make the point that hunkering is unhelpful.

I imagine so, I believe this sort of thing to be in common use in remote regions of the world; instead of sending a doctor, they can send a nurse and a machine and the doctor can work remotely.

One good thing about your approach is that the more people are exposed, become ill and recover the quicker the virus will have to go away and the more percentages of people on planet earth who are immune will rise.

Stunning, isn't it? It's what a command economy can do when it feels the need.
I thought they might be stretching a point until I read.."Wuhan is constructing a hospital modeled after the Xiaotangshan SARS hospital in Beijing, Wuhan authorities said in a Friday notice. The facility will be a prefabricated structure on a 270,000-square-foot lot, slated for completion Feb. 3.

The SARS hospital was built from scratch in 2003 in just six days to treat an outbreak of a similar respiratory virus that had spread from China to more than a dozen countries and killed about 800 people. The hospital featured individual isolation units that looked like rows of tiny cabins."
I don't doubt that whatever can be done, will be done to isolate this virus in China, but with so many traveling so far so fast worldwide, will other countries be able to step up to the challenge?
Imagine the logistics involved in maintaining services and supplies to a city of 11 million, imagine what would happen if a 'small' city like Vancouver were to be forcibly isolated, imagine the uproar, imagine the resistance, imagine the political arguments that'd paralyse any action.

It might happen with no need to imagine.

But then I'm probably being an alarmist.... or am I?

Give China credit when it comes to building stuff quickly they certainly can.

I have don't have much confidence Vancouver could handle a big viral outbreak well, our hospitals can barely handle normal flu season.

Sure they can handle a handful of cases well, but say 500, 1,200, 2000 people ill with a virus like this, I have no faith the system could handle it.

The NY Times is doing a live commentary, numbers of confirmed cases outside China to date (now)
◆ Thailand and Hong Kong have each reported eight cases of infection; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; France has three; Canada and Vietnam have two, and Nepal has one.
One of the Vietnamese people who have it has never been to China and has no close family who have either, which apparently is being taken as a sign that the virus doesn't require close contact to spread.

I'd be very seriously suggesting the conference is rescheduled, as I think it'd be too much of a risk for it to go ahead given the current circumstances.

First case confirmed in BC, man in his 40's who arrived in Vancouver region last week sometime from China, man is doing well and in self isolation at home, appears he put himself into self isolation on his return before showing symptoms.

Interesting article on the lack of preparedness in ON when it came to SARS, and how BC had a plan in place for pandemics and largely controlled the spread and only 1 healthcare worker ever catching it.
