There are many people who are very very upset with the property issue.
Mrs Brinks Matt has seen and read in the papers that we have all have seen ie child labour etc. This upset people and sometimes they say or write things at the heat of moment that they do not mean or out of anger. Mrs Brinks Matt has much to offer this forum and she should not be driven away. Banyan. |

Agree! Everybody is entitled to their opinion and it would be a very boring forum or world if we was all the same. Banyan. |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
I am shocked that these racial comments have any support what so ever.
Yes India has its social problems and is corrupt, also the treatment to people who have purchased property are being treated dreadfull. But this is not a excuse to make vile racist comments. I am disgusted by senior members support and dont give a damm if i stand alone. Probably because i dont agree with your sites pathetic moderators i will be expelled well so be it. |

They say things out of anger and take it out of others when they should not. Banyan. |

The athletes' accommodation in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games has been described as having faeces-stained toilets, cockroaches, leaking plumbing, overflowing sewage and dangerous electric wiring.
The Indian team have stated that they really appreciate the upgrade. |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Hi folks
Can we please avoid getting into yet another nasty series of exchanges on here. Many people don't like what others have to say, but everyone has the right to an opinion. If you disagree with what is said, feel free to say so (I did), but I personally find it unpleasant reading when it all becomes so personal and nasty, which seems to be happening quite a bit of late. I cannot see what all the fuss is about just beacause there was a cobra in a bedroom. Where you have rats the snakes will follow.

Infighting begins over Commonwealth Games
28 Sep: Financial Times (UK). India’s sports administrators are turning on each other as the embarrassment around the ramshackle preparations for the Commonwealth Games intensifies in a dispute that threatens to tar the country’s leadership... PIOs will get to purchase property in India faster 28 Sep: Financial Express. The Indian diaspora would soon have some cause for cheer. The government has decided to permit persons of Indian origin (PIO) to buy property in India without the mandatory approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is also working on enabling non-residents whose mothers or grandmothers were citizens of India to buy real estate in the country... Visa requirement would also be waived for investments by PIOs ... The home ministry is at present reviewing this norm which insists on business visa for foreigners acquiring properties in India ... full details on www.goanvoice.org.uk  |

I was under the impression that PIO was only passed through the male side i.e. a father or grandfather. Which is correct?

FEMA: "A person of Indian origin' means an individual (not being a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh or Sri Lanka or Afghanistan or China or Iran or Nepal or Bhutan), who (i) at any time, held Indian passport; or (ii) who or either of whose father or whose grandfather was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955);" PIO Card: "Who is eligible? Any person: * who at any time held an Indian passport; or * he/she or either of his/her parents or grandparents or great grandparents was born in and permanently resident in India as defined in the Government of India Act, 1935 and other territories that became part of India thereafter provided neither was at any time a citizen of any country as may be specified by the Central Government from time to time; or * who is a spouse of a citizen of India or a Person of Indian Origin as mentioned above." Now in practice (certainly in Goa - and I suspect Goa is the strictest place in India) if you've got a PIO Card you will be allowed to buy and register property - as a PIO! .... also I have a vague recollection that there was a general Act which overode gender-specific terms in Indian law. AndyD 8-)# P.S. from http://www.hcilondon.org/piocard.htm What benefits accrue to a PIO Card holder? * No visa required for visiting India. * Exemption from the requirement of registration if stay in India does not exceed 6 months. Should the continuous stay exceed 6 months, registration will be required within 30 days of the expiry of 6 months with the concerned Foreigners Registration Officer. (CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION CHECKLIST) * Parity with non-resident Indians in respect of facilities available to the latter in economic, financial and educational fields. * All facilities in the matter of acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal of immovable properties in India except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural/plantation properties. |
