Well I'm still cold. Just got off the phone from a friend in the UK. She's cold as well. However, it's winter here and summer there so mustn't grumble. Not much anyway.

Maybe the part of the UK that I lived was very different to some other posters here? Or maybe my experience was just different because of other factors? Or maybe the Australia that I've settled in is different? All I know is the place I left versus the place that I've arrived at is a huge improvement. My kids no longer have to look over their shoulders and venture outdoors with their fists clenched and their hackles up. There's no visible gang culture here. Everything is clean, bright and nice (could do with less graffiti though but even that gets quickly washed away). Everyone's friendly, relaxed and well-mannered.
The daft suggestions from some that if you saw things wrong with the UK then you aint ganna settle easily here is a load of bollocks. As is the yet to be seen British moan-about-home-ers turned benefits scroungers. Every British migrant that I know is either working/owning a business or pulling out all the stops to do the same. I love living here though and would never go back - not even for a holiday after the last one. I know that not all of the UK is the same, but we could never afford a move within the UK. We just couldn't find a job that paid enough to cover the extra cost of living. Moving 12,000k was strangely more affordable

That one is right up there with schoolkids cant celebrate Christmas. There are plenty of people every year that celebrate St Georges Day and because the Daily Mail gives us a shock horror story of some bloke in Scunthorpe accused of racism for flying the flag it doesn't make it anymore than it is, an isolated incident.

Or better still those that find happiness here ( I am truly happy for them) and then make excuses for all the thing here that they hated about the UK. Somehow they are OK here. :)

How the **** did you deduce from my post that it was a one-off? It was a mid-week happening; I can only imagine what Fridays and Saturdays are like.
I've been in A&E late on a Friday night in Bradford, mate - you don't need to tell me what the UK's like  (Trust me all of these are kindergarten compared to Downtown New York, where I once had the misfortune to spend most of my weekend in A&E on a drip. Armed guards on the doors.) You can't wait to get out of Grimsby, I can certainly understand that. Glad I never had to spend a Friday or Saturday night in A&E though  |

A & E departments have security guards or police. I am not sure what point you are trying to make |

I think he may become one of the immigrants I mentioned elsewhere who will make excuses or just ignore the same things here he hated in the UK. It's all about justification.

WOW I would never had thought it would happen in a big city like Sidney:rofl: and this sounds like a one off,
In the UK this happens even in the small towns like Doncaster, Hartlepool,Blackpool, Grimsby Thetford and this is regular, the place I live Grimsby, certain parts of the town EVERY Friday and Saturday a police van with cctv stands guard just in case, this is life in most UK towns not cities, the majority of hospitals in the UK have to have a police presence on the A&E dept on a weekend |

If you live in Grimsby, things are becoming clearer;). I can remember standing in a taxi queue near Grimsby Town station, having to quickly move out of the way while a couple of drunks were thrown out of the pub alongside the queue:lol:. Grimsby has always been a bit of a rough town, with a very conservative population.
Both of us were goths at the time - went down well, I can tell you  |
Re: Why is everyone so serious ?
Right, I'm off out to walk the dog. I have my full body armour on as I go onto the mean streets of Dorset.
I may not make it back alive   Yes, there are some problems in the UK that need to be sorted out. There are definitely some areas in some cities that I would not choose to live in. I lived in Mile End / Whitechapel for a while in the 90's and that was a sh**hole even then  However, there are plenty of other places that are great for bringing up families etc. Of course it makes a huge difference to the way you view things if you can move from a rough part of the UK to a decent part of Australia. Or vice versa. It also makes a huge difference if you make or lose money going either way due to the exchange rate. Personally, I think I could be reasonably happy in either country because I choose to focus on what's good rather than what's bad. |

I have no idea what A&E is like in Sydney at the weekend or even during the week, but neither do you. You are picking out the worst aspects of life in UK and just jumping to the conclusion that same or similar could never happen in Australia simply because it is Australia and the land of milk and honey. Honestly, your posts are absurd.
I have never needed to go to A&E on a Saturday night in either country, how come this is such a major problem for you that it features on your list of reasons to escape the UK. I admit I do not know a great deal about Australia that's why I come on this site, to find out where to look for work, cheap places to live, instead all I get is that I am expecting too much, got news for you I am not expecting anything. The one thing I do remember about Brisbane, leaving a bar walking through the city centre, early morning just as the clubs/pubs was kicking out and there was hardly any police presence there, and no sign of any trouble, and this from a major city, and this was the case nearly all the time I was there. |

When you move to Australia you don't lose all contact with people who live in the UK you know. Many people I know express no concerns about their personal safety - including Australian friends who live in W London and regularly experience going out in both countries. In fact one of them claims to find Melbourne more worrying. We get the message - it's grim where you live - but it isn't everywhere. |

I went to some towns in Australia that I wouldn't live in either  Equally, I have been to places in both countries that I'm sure I would be very happy to live in. I'm not blind to the U.K's problems, I just know that all westernised societies have them in one form or another. I hope you do find somewhere that ticks all your boxes in Australia. If you know what it is you want out of life and you do your research then you are half way there. I'm fairly sure I could be happy in Brisbane (or elsewhere in Australia) if I could be sure that my OH and I could get work. Recent threads on here have suggested that may not be the case though, and that is a worry when we both have reasonable secure jobs here. |
