I found people in shops to be generally happy and friendly and had people thank me when I held a door. How lucky was I that I didn't go to that other UK some talk about
I would really hate to live in that UK that's for sure, it sounds like hell.

Did you see any dogging?

A silly question, but if you are not happy in Australia why are you still there, you made a statement earlier that you fly to the UK on a regular basis, so you must have ties here in the UK, I hate the way the UK is heading, life here is not like it used to be, even 5 years ago, it is why I decided I want to get out, why stay in a place what makes you unhappy

As a relatively recent British emigrant I know exactly what you mean. There's still a lot of greatness to the place but Britain is a shadow of what it once was. It needs some very serious social tough love, the immediate re-introduction of conscription, total abandonment of the disasterous experiment with multiculturalism and encouragement for everyone there to integrate into a single dynamic British culture. The door slammed shut for now on further migrants to that already shockingly overcrowed country, the EU given the long overdue boot and the previous zaNu-Labour government to be held accountable for all of their shocking acts of treason. And that would be just for starters. :frown:

So here we are in Australia. It isn't perfect here - in fact it has loads of things wrong with it but at least for my family and I in 2011 it's a haven safe from all the British mayhem and currently the best place to be.

...But ten/twenty/thirty years from now? Who knows?

Good luck.

I've been going out regularly in town centres across the UK since 1993. If anything I would say it is much safer now. Security staff are better licenced and trained and CCTV everywhere.
Britain isn't becoming any more of a 'binge drinking' (hate that term) nation than it ever was. Just because certain newspapers love to throw up stories now and again of bladdered young girls unconcious in the street doesn't mean that never happened 15 years ago - it did. Britain is hardly perfect but it's not 'broken'.

I still maintain anyone that is 'escaping' the UK to get away from these perceived problems will likely not have a successful migration.

There is some lovely hypocrisy among some immigrants in Australia from the UK. A set of people happy to bemoan the multi-culturalism of the UK as these 'scroungers' are stealing benefits and living the life of riley on the tax payers' expense yet have arrived in Oz and got themselves stuck firmly in the benefit system in Australia.

Aren't they aware on that basis they are just the same as the 'dole bludgers' and immigrants back in the UK they moved to get away from and there's a big swathe of Aussie society who don't want them here either!?

Re: Why is everyone so serious ?

Spot on. On my recent trip to the UK I actually went out of my way to find the doom and gloom some prefer to believe in, as we were at that stage planning a permanent move to England I wanted to see the good and the bad. I was very pleased that the good greatly outweighed the bad. I found people to be friendly, helpful and polite. I didn't find the streets covered in rubbish, I didn't see dole queues stretching for miles, I didn't find that everyone was penniless and miserable. IF some would rather see the UK from a negative perspective to perhaps make themselves feel better about their decision then that is up to them.
I can tell you that this country has changed enormously in the last 15 to 20 years and I dare say every other country has as well.
I never felt unsafe anywhere I visited while in the UK, I really don't see this place some people talk about.

Maybe. Never seen it myself. Apparently you need a licence for it in Aus.

really?
how can you have a 'dynamic british culture' when you've slammed the door shut on immigration? Britain, like most countries, evolves through successive waves of migration.
