There are plenty of places in most major UK cities that are exactly like that.

Well I guess cities anywhere are pretty unfriendly places, I've never lived one and never would to be honest.

To be honest then, I really don't think you can have a true perspective on life in the UK, for a very large percentage (most?) of the population.

Well I also cant have a true perspective of life for people on farms or who live near the beach or in a village or on a houseboat. I doubt most of the UK population live right in the city.

According to Nationmaster 89% of the UK population live in an 'urban environment'. Depending on how you define 'urban' there must be a bloody big percentage of city dwellers.

A couple of months ago I had a severe asthma attack, ended up in a Sydney inner city A&E dept about 10 o'clock at night. As I was registering, the triage nurse was trying to persuade a woman to go home as she'd been discharged that afternoon. I think she wanted more drugs.

After I'd gone through triage to a 2nd waiting area, there was a woman with a suspected stroke who had been waiting since 4pm to be seen by a doctor. She went for a scan about midnight.

Shortly after that, a man obviously off his face on more than beer was brought in, and soon threatened to "smash the place up" because he was told he couldn't go for a cigarette. He was soon joined by another bloke in a similar state (and shoeless and filthy) and a much younger girl who could hardly walk. None of them wanted to be there but it became apparent they'd been arrested and sent to hospital by the police. The second bloke wanted to go home without having tests and quickly threatened to kill himself. The young girl went to sleep on the floor and it took quite a few nurses to persuade her it wasn't a good thing to do. She then sat and wailed and rocked.

At about 1am, after my breathing had eased but I still hadn't been seen, I asked the nurse to give me the OK to go home as it really wasn't a nice place to be. She agreed, with a resigned, "and it's not even the weekend".

Sorry, what was your point?

WOW I would never had thought it would happen in a big city like Sidney:rofl: and this sounds like a one off,
In the UK this happens even in the small towns like Doncaster, Hartlepool,Blackpool, Grimsby Thetford and this is regular, the place I live Grimsby, certain parts of the town EVERY Friday and Saturday a police van with cctv stands guard just in case, this is life in most UK towns not cities, the majority of hospitals in the UK have to have a police presence on the A&E dept on a weekend

Yes it is a huge issue here, hospital staff are regularly attacked. Sorry to say it seems like a universal issue.

Is your pathological fear of crime the main motivator to leave Great Grimsby?

I have no idea what A&E is like in Sydney at the weekend or even during the week, but neither do you. You are picking out the worst aspects of life in UK and just jumping to the conclusion that same or similar could never happen in Australia simply because it is Australia and the land of milk and honey. Honestly, your posts are absurd.

I have never needed to go to A&E on a Saturday night in either country, how come this is such a major problem for you that it features on your list of reasons to escape the UK.

Well I'm still cold. Just got off the phone from a friend in the UK. She's cold as well. However, it's winter here and summer there so mustn't grumble. Not much anyway.

How the **** did you deduce from my post that it was a one-off? It was a mid-week happening; I can only imagine what Fridays and Saturdays are like.

I've been in A&E late on a Friday night in Bradford, mate - you don't need to tell me what the UK's like

(Trust me all of these are kindergarten compared to Downtown New York, where I once had the misfortune to spend most of my weekend in A&E on a drip. Armed guards on the doors.)

You can't wait to get out of Grimsby, I can certainly understand that.

There are plenty of places in Industrial Qld less appealing than Grimsby in my opinion. I remember the beach there being quite pleasant and a restaurant in Cleethorpes does the best fish and chips I've ever had. I remember the Pier as well for some rather rampant nights out as a teenager.
