Yes, hugely sad. I`m sure it was him that got us watching the first series. They managed the second series without him, so probably will manage a third. Not a bad show, not great. It`s a bit like Dallas with gladiators!

The show should be able to survive the re-cast, as it is an ensemble show, more than just the Spartacus character. First episode is on-line on Starz web site

Last series was a prequel though...
Anyway, anyone who hasn't seen Sherlock, probably shouldn't be reading the Guardian as it gives a little spoiler away to the ending of the second series, though chances are, you've probably already guessed the out come....do watch that final episode very closely, especially the last 20 mins!

I noticed the series "Up all Night" with Will Arnett and Christina Applegate was on "on Demand" last night and was bored so thought I'd take a peek.
I ended up watching 4 episodes in a row, I loved it. Funny stuff, especially the pilote episode.

Spartacus - episode 1 of the new series
30 seconds in was enough to remind me of what is crap about this show, and what is great, often they are the same thing. I like the way (and I think it is partly down to budget) they make it so theatrical, with the dodgy green screen computer sky and background, but that just adds a nice distance between the times and events and the characters and makes us appreciate the drama all the more. A pity more film and television does not try to learn more from theater instead of thinking it must be all about realism.
The new guy isn't bad, but he isn't Whitfield either. His performance is patchy, sometimes he was a little weak at other times he was convincing. The series has room to grow and develop a few new characters John Hannah is missed. I am looking forward to Spartacus giving Gaius a hiding on the slopes of Vesuvius.

Spoiler:
Finally got around to seeing this, and largely agree with you. I hope they can re-kindle the spark the old series had.
I also think they should stop trying to render Latin by talking in telegraphese, and give Spartacus at least a scratch on his face seeing as he has spent the last few years getting his head kicked in on a daily basis.

And Lucy made a reappearance.I`m sure I heard mention of two Romans called "Foetus" and "Virus".
It is all the most deliciously silly nonsense since "The Tudors".

So we're still watching Once Upon a Time and I'm still watching Grimm.
Both have gotten really shit though as well as even more stupid than when they started. Don't know why we bother as not really enjoying them any more. Oh well.
