Nitrogen is inert, compared to air, with it's reactive oxygen content.

Oxygen is reactive while pure nitrogen is not. Also, it is drier and water in tire is not a good idea. Here is a Popular Mechanics article.

That is what I had heard, that the moisture in plain old "air" makes the pressure fluctuate significantly as the water vapour condenses during a cool night, and then evaporates as the ambient temperature rises and the tyre gets warm when driven at speed.

We use Nitrogen in the tyres on the race car... if we remember.
Saves a fair bit of messing about with pressures.

do I need to go back beyond this page now and catch up .....?

How many years are people getting out of car batteries here?

In the Arizona heat i'm averaging just two years. And when they die they die suddenly with no warning or indications.

I've tried the extreme heat rated ones from sears and currently get warranty replacements (last one was free) from o'reilly's auto parts.
I wonder how many battery manufacturers there are and if there are any significant differences on these batteries. Jiffy lube tried to sell me a Nascar one once.

I got almost seven out of mine. It crapped out last August after a long weekend away. Went to pick up dinner, it wouldn't start

Longer than two years I think. One wonders if there are other underlying problems with the electrics, alternator perhaps?

On our Accord, the first lasted 6½ years/160,000 miles, the Honda replacement in the same car, with the same usage, in the same location (i.e roughly the same weather), only lasted 4 years/90,000 miles. After replacing a Honda brand cat after 16 months usage, I am beginning to think that Honda branded parts are sh!te.

The F250's battery lasted 9 years, 10 months/ 45,000 miles, and the Mustang had a new battery after, I think, about 11 years/ 42,000 miles.

The Accord and the F250 both now have AAA batteries. The Mustang has a Ford/Motorcraft battery.

Anywhere from 4-6 years. I now use AAA batteries. If you have a dead battery, they send out a battery only service person to test the battery and the charging system. If the battery only needs replacement, they have in the truck. Cost is competitive.

The Beemer was a different kettle of fish. When the battery went, it took out half of the electronics. and the starter motor It had to be "towed" [in quotation marks because no one actually tows the cars anymore] and it was a $1100 job by the time we were done. The battery in that car could power a Sherman Tank from the looks of it. It went out at 7 1/2 years.

Well i saw the battery test meter they use displaying an alternator test. Not sure how that works. Our mini van showed signs of the battery going for the first time at the weekend. I took it in Sunday and the battery test passed, Monday morning my wife calls me at work, its dead. I don't think those meters are very accurate, but they need to read dead to get a warranty replacement. At the weekend my replacement was free so i couldn't have been on the pro-rated portion of my 36 month warranty.

Interesting about the AAA, we are members. Interesting that they would come to your house. I thought they were a roadside only service, for example if your car breaks down in your garage or on your driveway they won't come out and attempt a fix or tow it to a garage.

Bummer on beemer, never heard of that happening.

That's odd because most Honda 'enthusiasts' think Honda parts are extremely good and the only reason not to get them is the cost.
All parts are manufacturer dependent and some have a different supplier over the years. The two items you mentioned are likely to have that happen.
Mind you 6.5yrs on a new car and 4yrs on the same but older car seems consistent for the same battery.

We had a couple years on one, then 4 years on one and then 4.

They do tend to die a little more suddenly than I remember from the UK but we've a booster box which helped and no, it wasn't the alternator in the last car.

Last battery was a InterState one and it was shit, died the min the warranty finished.

Current battery is one we got at Walmart which so far is only a year and a bit old but we put it in the car from the old car, replacing the bog standard GM battery in the Saab which was about to die at 6 years old.
