Your INTERNET SPEED ?
#121
Well, would you believe it. Yesterday morning I got a call from a Movistar engineer, who wanted to come to my house to sort the upgrade on my internet speed.
He arrived, set up another new modem, and then went again saying he had to connect it to a box

Then a couple of hours later he called to say that it was impossible to set up the 6 mb connection I had been promised, as we were too far away from the exchange.
So I have what I always had but with a brand new modem that does nothing, and I will it seems never get a faster connection than around .6 to .8 Mb here

the community wireless system is an option, using a dish to have a permanant link to a satellite is also possible but expensive to set up and the line charges are much higher
depends on how much you want to be on BE but as you say - you got a new boxy thingy out of it which probably has wi-fi ?

not sure on 5k but it would sound likely they don't have the strength of signal at the exchange or you are on a large network causing the voltage drop. if the download improves in the middle of the night then there is an office or factory on the network downstream effecting all of you upstream. would assume any neighbours would also have the same problem.

They want €199 + for setting it up, and that involves some kind of large pointy thing on your roof, and I might get 6 mb. However I have to sign up for a long contract and due to reading stuff about how it doesnt always work that well, I'm not prepared to commit

some people have very good - 50mb in Madrid
but others only a few miles outside towns have 0.8mb
there are some who have the Community Wireless system which gives 4-6mb if really lucky
so there is no real answer, but remember that even in the UK where everything is bigger and better that there are people living in hamlets within 20m of London where they are lucky to get 1mb, and it gets worse of you live in places like the Yorkshire Dales.

however, it will depend on what you need (or is it just want) and where you are going to be located.
in the major city's 50mb is probably the best for a household but it is probable more could be obtained on a commercial contract, but always the location is a factor.
in uk Virgin are offering 100mb in the home but that is a largely fully owned and wired system. In spain there are many problems such as flaky wiring, lose connections, local networks, some exchanges not having the necessary eqpt and long cable runs leading to line loss.
as there are so many weak links in the chain already, everyone forgets the other important link - your pc !! is it capable of handling the superfast because if not then why pay for something you can't use.
