perhaps because of the infrastructure in sp along with the lack of competition (or should that be viable competition?) then it is going to be difficult. the rural wireless systems for those living in remote areas has proved relatively successful as reported by one or two on here.
but as I keep saying, sp is abt 20yrs behind uk on many things but catching up fast. but will it be fast enough!

Whilst it's only natural to want more speed there is validity in the question 'who actually needs it ?
For the basic functions of surfing and email etc. a couple of mb is perfectly adequate. Nobody needs to stream HD TV or movies and lets face it, 99% of sizeable downloading is of illegal material
I'm not being a luddite but I think it would be to the greater good if instead of constantly upping the city dwellers, who for the most part already enjoy speeds undreamt of in the hinterlands, the telcos were made to get at least say a couple of mb to everyone.

My test says ping 105 download 3.89 upload 0.42
Can someone tell me what a ping ? is this a good result or a bad one ? I am with talktalk for 4 think they are called mbs but not sure.
I would just add that talktalk have a great customer service team ( good english spoken, unlike the parrots at telefonica) and a website in English if needed

if the ping cannot find the remote computer then it doesnt come back (or times out)
there are ways of doing the ping that will give you a complete list of all the routers on the intertnet that are between you and the remote computer, which are called "hops" but just the basic ping you have done is adequate.
the term "ping" is taken from sonar technology (hence my reference to Red October) but could also apply to asdic and radar which send out pulses and receive back a reflection
hope this helps

I think you are confusing WANT with NEED. You don't want a dish for TV but you could use one therefore it is a question of personal preference not need.

In my case, a dish is not an option, but even if it were, I wouldn't have one for reasons already stated!!!

I'm not trying to be anything nor assuming, simply respondin to what you wrote.
You said you don't have and don't want a dish, nothing about not being able to have one and if you can't then yes you do need a reasonably high speed connection

And I merely responded to your post No. #101. You said nobody needs to streem HD TV. I meerly point out, that you are not correct.

having looked at the costs vs benefits of all telecom and media systems available I think it is a shame that AFAIK it is not normally possible to get low cost broadband only (without telephone) (except in costly commercial configurations)
this would mean so many dishes would become redundant except for the real die-hard's who want to trawl the satellites across the visible spectrum
