Re: How to apply for Engineering job sponsorship offshore?

I'd write to companies asking them if they sponsor offshore applicants. You may very well find one that is short of employees so is willing to give you a go.

Re: visa query for girlfriend to stay in australia, please help

If she wants to do a phd can she convince a company to sponsor her? Perhaps if she had a chat with the academics within the department and ask them: Do they know of any academic with funding who it...

Re: Does government help with Housing?

I remember reading an article about a family in Geelong living in their car while another put up a tent by a road to advertise their plight.

It went through my mind what on earth is going on?

Re: Does government help with Housing?

Ace, what I find funny are the parents who believe that their child is the most precious thing on the planet, yet with 6 billion people in the world their child really is as common as muck

Re: Question for Australians who have lived in the uK

I thought the UK was cheap when I went back last month, but I was using my Aussie debit card to pay for everything to get the benefit of the exchange rate.

Stuff off amazon is so much cheaper than...

Re: Does government help with Housing?

The hostel I stayed in in St Kilda was like a migrant arrival centre - everybody was there until they sorted out a job and house then left:p

I was only there for 8 days. That was a record

Re: Does government help with Housing?

If i were a real estate agent I'd say that they were quaint, rustic and traditional houses in the beautiful Australian countryside.

Re: Petrol prices by State.

The graduations on my petrol gauge aren't linear - I think Mazda put in an extra 'scare factor'. Car takes 30 litres. The halfway mark is when 10 litres are left, the next point is when only 3 litres...

Re: Does the government help with buying beer?

Buy a home brew kit from Kmart, then try to deduct it against tax as a work expense.

Then say "Dammit, you actually want me to work while sober???" if they ask

Might not work in Victoria...

Re: Does government help with Housing?

General rule of thumb for Melbourne is estimate how much the property would be to rent in the UK and double it.

Re: Aircon or no aircon? Melbourne weather

I'm quite happy with a fan. I have a misting one. There's maybe one or two days a year here when it's unbearable. At that time it's best to pop around to see someone who has aircon

Re: Does government help with Housing?

I'd love to live in council housing in Melbourne, have a nice view over the city or Williamstown.

I'd then like to jack my job in and spend my day sitting around outside drinking with all the...

Re: Deductions from wges packet ?

Hi, I think it depends on if the amount they offered was a 'package' (they deduct super from that) or just an amount + percent super and then it will be paid on top.

Some employers advertise the...

Re: Do I need to apply for 457 if I'm waiting for 175 to be approved?

I'd have a look here: http://www.beupdate.co.uk/

It's a spreadsheet people fill in their visa timelines. Of course every application is different, but you can get a very rough idea of what timings...

Re: Do I need to apply for 457 if I'm waiting for 175 to be approved?

I was under the impression that you couldn't hasten the 175 with a job offer, so yes you would need the 457 (which would involve the organisation sponsoring you etc) until the 175 comes through.

I...

Re: Here comes the house price slow down.

I've been tracking prices in the SE of Melbourne, Springvale, Dandie, Noble Park etc.

I've noticed that the volume of properties in my price range, cheap as poss, seems to have fallen off.

Re: Cost of Housing compared to wages

Meanwhile in the parallel universe of Melbourne, houses tend to be around the $500,000 mark and I'd say that the mean wage isn't that much different from that in Tasmania.

A pokey (sorry cosy...

Re: Anyone know much about Geelong?

That's a tricky question. Imagine being asked which UK city would you compare Paris or Berlin to - the answer is you can't really. They're different in their own little ways

Re: Passport delayed over and over

I wonder why the office was moved to NZ. One would have thought it would make more sense closing the office in NZ and moving it to Aus - they probably handle more applications over here.
