Re: How expensive are the houses in Melbourne?

I spent three happy years living in the West, in Albion. CBD by train in 19 minutes, on a weekend could drive in in 15. I find it a bit odd for people to write off an entire 'side' of the city.

Re: Update: First month living in Broken Hill

Re: 8 months in

:D Yes, it does sound like I might have some interesting hobbies on reflection! Nothing more exciting than mountain biking, walking, vintage/collectables, visiting/exploring different towns and...

8 months in

I thought it about time to post an update. I know I am not a frequent poster so this post may have limited value but I hope it will have some, to someone, at some point!

I've copied some of this...

Do you ever plan to return to Australia Chris?

Re: Budgeting for Life in the UK

I would second/third this. You might just stumble across something that hasn't occurred to you, it's not a tool that really reflects any one life style, just a prompt as to what your regular expenses...

Re: The weird and deep thread about England

We have one of these in the kitchen of our rented house. They're a fab idea and do work well but definitely not in the kitchen of someone who loves to cook! We've had to totally abandon it sadly but...

Re: The Welcome Mat?

Actually, I genuinely had no idea.

Have I honestly suggested otherwise?

Please tell me where I've suggested anything about rose tinted glasses or the honeymoon period. Not that I need...

Re: The Welcome Mat?

I hope I didn't sound pious or censorious Emperor, and I certainly don't mean to imply no one should complain, I truly am sorry for those who had bad experiences in Australia, just as I'm sorry about...

Re: Questioning our move

I posted a couple of times when I was at around the same point you are; moved back, the fun and reunions were over and real life was kicking in. It took me months to find a job and I was unemployed...

Re: The Welcome Mat?

I'm really sorry for those posters who have had such horrible experiences in Australia (and in the UK too). I feel incredibly fortunate that the Australia described here is not the one I know and...

Re: The Welcome Mat?

I think there can be danger in looking for (a) concrete reason(s) for choosing to return to the UK. The way we describe it to people who ask is that there was no push to leave Australia, more a pull...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I realise that this is not really the subject of this thread but this is so true. It drives me freaking mad that people can't recognise that choosing to buy something online or at a giant Tesco extra...

Re: Boat arrivals -> P New Guinea

Genuine question: what exactly are you 'just sayin'? That Vietnamese and Lebanese asylum seekers of the 70s and 80s shouldn't have been granted asylum? That their offspring are not Australian but are...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Hi FloralJane. You're not going to end up in a Ramsey Street style place full of Brits. There are certainly plenty of Brits but really, it's nothing like say Hong Kong, where all the expats end up in...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I was planning on posting a proper update so won't rabbit on for too long (I hope).

We returned to the UK in December 2012 after nearly 6 years in Australia. We had never assigned a time scale to...

Re: Land Pets in Paris or UK?

It probably depends a little on your animals and how good you think they will be at travelling.

We flew direct because we wanted their journey to be over as soon as possible; they are both...

Re: Boat arrivals -> P New Guinea

On what basis do you say that?

While people continue to talk in terms of 'illegal aliens' and make snap character judgments on an entire group of people it will never be possible to have a...

Re: Landed in melb 4 days unsure if i should , help!

Re: Your HONEST opinion, please.

I wasn't too clear: are you talking about a household income of 30-35k or will two adults be working?

I am on a probation wage which will increase by 25% in November, so not sure exactly what our...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

The only people who ever commented on my accent were other Brits, generally people who had been there a long time. I hung out with a fairly young, international crowd though, made up of many Aussies...

Re: Passports

I looked into this in some detail although I wanted to enter on an expired Irish passport, rather than an expired UK passport (and with a current passport from a country other than the US). I read...

Re: Homesick still & returning to the uk help please:/

Hi OP,

I'm sorry you feel so unhappy it's a real struggle to live like that each day.

As others have queried, has your husband actually agreed to go back to the UK? If not, there are other...

Re: How did your pets cope when you moved them back?

Forgot to say ours are also effectively indoors. They had a roof terrace in Oz and when we buy will have an outdoor area, possibly the whole garden if we can cat proof it.

Re: How did your pets cope when you moved them back?

I'm glad you found it useful, I was worried it would be a bit negative but I didn't want to sugarcoat anything. One thing I would say is that the flights from Australia are MUCH longer, and involved...
