today's rain is not norm for Melbourne but we do get more seasons than the other states. Melbourne is suppose to be the most European of all the Australian cities.

Beautiful day here out in the SE. Cold, sunny.

Not a sound to be heard all morning, or indeed after midday. The Ashes? Everyone had a late one?

Not hugely into sports, but Melbourne is the place to be if you are. Yes the weather is freezing at the moment, but it'll soon be spring and then it'll be beautiful.
I would have loved the opportunity to live here before having children, I think it has something for everyone.
I've not been to Perth so can't compare it, but I would encourage you to give it a while longer before you decide it's not for you.

Hi thanks for that its good to hear there are familys out here somewhere, how do you find the commute into the city for work? I got up today thinking I would take peoples advice and give it some more time but since then I had had several tram rides crammed in next to some seriously smelly people. I have filled out an application for a studio, so basiclly its a hotel room, its right in the center of melb so i wont have to commute. I should hand it in tommorrow but i am still reluctant i am not sure i am cut out for city life

I don't find Melbourne anything like London. It could be that the difference between suburban Perth and London are complete poles apart that anywhere a little more urban may appear that way.
Melbourne is still mostly low density and nowhere near the street life or numbers that are a fact of London.
All three cities are expensive and more grey skies in winter in Melbourne but can't think of much else.
For a single guy Melbourne should be a far superior place to be.

Good question, theres a few options

I could return to perth and maybe find a job that suits me better and just put up with perth :P

I could go back to the uk, maybe live with family for a bit while I explore some towns. Perhaps I could find a quiet more countryside based town that still has some work.

Or I get this Studio apartment in melb.

Damn its hard to type all of this on a phone, appologies for any mistakes

I can't help but feel that countryside based work would be a disaster.

Melbourne is like London in so far it is basically a city, and busyish (in so far as Perth is not quite so...!)

if that's the case, why not give yourself 6 months or something to see how it goes

what opportunities are there for you, what are the reasons you want to leave Perth and will these go away if you change jobs

little more drastic than moving jobs/interstate - is it Australia you want to get out of or just Perth? What do you really actually want here, be honest with yourself.

and so if you did, imagine living there and working... what really is stopping you here?

you need a big piece of paper to write down the pros and cons and if you're completely honest the answer will be there in black and white.

Your description is not like the Melbourne I know but then I love cities and if anything sometimes found Melbourne a little too small! Going somewhere in winter for the first time is always going to be tough, especially when you don't know anyone or have much of an idea of where to go.

I can guess where you might have been looking at properties from the description of the hipsters. I lived in the CBD (loved it), the suburbs (the suburb itself was fine but by God, I hate suburban living) and then West Melbourne (also loved it). I think the CBD is a pretty good base, can you find anything on a shorter lease than a year? I think it would be a good place to be living to meet people, to avoid commuting and to get to know Melbourne. Once you're a bit more settled then a suburb might suit you, it sounds like you're not a city dweller by nature.

I'd stay stick it out if you can.

Hi Dave

Maybe you should head further north. The weather here in NSW has been beautiful.
On the day we arrived though, it was cold and overcast and my heart sank. It can really colour your view of a place.
Think about how different things will be in a few weeks when the weather warms up.
Best of luck hope things work out

Dave, this doesn't sound like the best idea. Despite some of the evangelism it's not mandatory to love or even like Melbourne...and if you think you don't there's no problem with that!

If you're genuinely bothered by hipsters (you pretty much nailed the description by the way! ) then this might not be the place for you...although you'll find that less concentrated in the CBD than other inner suburbs.

I honestly read your posts and keep thinking you should be in Brisbane. It has those lower density inner suburbs I think you're looking for...and maybe you'd feel more like you're in Australia than London. Not saying I necessarily agree with that but everyone has different ideas about what the 'real' Australia is.

I luckily work part time locally so don't have to commute. Hubby commutes to work but he cycles in as he much prefers it to the trains - which are packed also!
Takes him approx. 45mins each way I think. I do remember when we first arrived here (in the middle of summer and it was boiling hot!),
I was going around looking at rentals with the kids in tow, thinking I wouldn't let an animal live in some of these places. They were awful, especially after leaving our nice house in the uk.
We finally found a modern rental after a lot of looking, then 3 years later moved into our own home. It does take time to settle somewhere new and I'm sure it's not for everyone,
but as I said we love it! Good luck with your decision and just ask if we can help with anything.
