Re: Moving to the USA

You mean the enhanced subsidies most likely will go away for 2026 onwards. The original subsidies would remain absent legislation to eliminate them and/or the ACA itself (as Trump tried to do in...

Re: Moving to the USA

So a four year gap until she is Medicare-eligible. You don't say your age, but presumably you'd both have to get an ACA (aka Obamacare) policy until then. The cost would depend on your combined...

Re: WTF in America Part 2

That's largely but not wholly true. The reason the LA - SF high speed rail line was designed to run through the eastern Central Valley was so it could serve intermediate stations in Bakersfield and...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

For me it's:

Part A $0
Part B $175
Part D $0.40 (yes, really)
Supplement G (high deductible) $31

That high deductible G saves me - as you point out - the potential for catastrophic uninsured...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I concur that the totalization agreement will allow you to qualify for US SS in addition to qualifying through your contributions for UK State Pension.

The US formula takes the 35 years with...

Re: Ecuador

Id love trekking in Ecuador (think Cotopaxi etc) but the current political situation gives me pause for thought. It seems to have gone from one of the more stable South American countries to a...

Re: Wise.com - New verification Process

Looks like this is a once-only process as I haven't been asked to do it again. A small new requirement on my last transfer was to select from a drop down the reason for my transfer - claimed to be...

Re: Visas and passports

Because if you don't they could notice the absence of a US entry stamp etc in your British passport and query it. I remember Virgin Atlantic getting weird about this one time.

Re: Visas and passports

This is exactly what I do for the Latin American countries that charge US citizens (but not UK citizens) a visa fee. When I board a flight to such a country from the US, I hand the agent both...

Re: UK State Pension Statement

It doesn't tell you what you received in the last UK tax year or the last calendar year. I, for example, got an amount in arrears so the weekly amount x 52 wouldn't work for me for 2023. So I guess...

Re: Bridge Collapse Baltimore

There was a somewhat similar incident in the San Francisco Bay a while back, except that it was the under-the-influence captain of the pilot boat that was to blame. The Cosco Busan hit one of the...

Re: UK State Pension and US tax return

+1. That’s the route I go because that’s the only way I can e-file my California state return.

Re: UK State Pension and US tax return

Not requiring a substitute 1099-R has another benefit for those, like you and me, who live in California. If you have a substitute 1099 (or a form 4852), California precludes you from filing...

Re: UK State Pension and US tax return

Did they put that in writing?

California also doesn't tax Social Security benefits (or SS Disability) but their tax code specifically defines these benefits as being "from the United States".

Re: UK State Pension and US tax return

It's a good question. Many links state that a non-qualified plan is one which isn't subject to the ERISA law, which obviously UK State Pension doesn't. For example:

"Nonqualified plans are those...

Re: UK Banks and Non-UK Residency Reporting for Tax Purposes

Ditto. I've had a Lloyds account as a US resident for almost 40 years now. But this action by Barclays is quite unsettling. I guess I would go the Wise route if they pulled the plug on US account...
