Re: Earthquake Alert

It does make you think that a survival kit is not too OTT after all. That "it will never happen to me" mentality is proven wrong so many times. I've had disaster kits in the past, but eventually...

Re: Earthquake Alert

We certainly felt it in Timaru - about 200km south - but nothing like Chirstchurch. The dog heard it coming and started barking moments before the violent shaking. Like an idiot, I tried to shut...

Re: Help please! Renting with a dog...

I haven't rented for a while, but we were never asked to fork out for a professional clean when we left and I don't think the landlord did it either. We just cleaned it ourselves. Different...

Re: Wanaka..

What do you do for work?
Wanaka is far from any major city, so make sure you can find employment.
If that's not an issue then I'd agree with the others - a lovely holiday destination for most...

Re: Monster bugs! What-a-Weta!

Some places are weta than others. Never seen any in the South Island, although they are around. In Auckland we used to come across them all the time. They'd come in through the windows, stick to...

Re: How safe do you guys feel?

A typical court report in Timaru involves someone nicking something from someone's garage, a punch up outside a party and a DUI. There are gangs and thugs, and sometimes bad things happen, but you...

Re: Skiing in NZ

Some of the South Island ones like Roundhill and Mt Dobson are cheaper. Cardrona is cool, but more expensive I think, but it is a lovely place to be when off the mountain.

Re: Weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Napier's a lovely place. Don't be put off. It's raining everywhere in NZ now. I'm in the South Island and it's been raining for about 10 days which is really unusual as this is a drought area,...

Re: Autumn

Plenty of scrunchy leaves in Timaru too and gorgeous colours. Not so much in the North Island though.

Re: Mid May and....

Crisp mornings here in Timaru. Have to light the fire at night, but the washing is still out during the day. :) Headed for 20 degrees tomorrow, which is pretty good for late Autumn.

Re: Bachelor of Health Science (Medical Imaging)

I looked at doing this once myself. It's a good job with good prospects, although depending on where you want to live there may not be a job available in your area when you qualify. If you're...

Re: good and bad news

I agree. You should be able to hold out if you are an RN, and either get them to raise your hours, or go somewhere else. As everyone said, Tauranga is lovely but quite expensive.

Re: dog walking

It is restricted for dogs here. I remember going back to UK as a teen and being shocked that dogs were allowed on public transport and allowed to sit at cafes and pubs. In NZ most towns have a dog...

Re: Heating.....

For some reason this form of heating is not common in NZ. I've never seen LPG central heating advertised, but the price seems OK. I hate heat pumps, but they do heat the house quickly. I'd just...

Re: How bad is it?

Sounds like you're in a lovely place and you like the lifestyle. Why does your wife want to go back? I agree that a holiday, with a view to moving, might be a good idea. Sometimes things can take...

Re: Heating.....

Oil filled heaters can be expensive, but if you only have it on a low setting on a timer switch it should be fine. Electric fan heaters are a quick fix, but I don't think the heat lasts long and it...

Re: Gisborne anyone??

It's quite pretty in places. There's a high Maori population and a reasonably high low economic factor. But it's a close community and if you are socialbe people you will probably be made to feel...

Re: clothes

For kids at playgroup why not go secondhand? Or give them an old shirt to wear over top.

Re: Winter

I've had to light the fire the last few nights, and it always seems kind of nice and cosy in autumn. I like the routine in winter of lighting the fire about 4pm, closing curtains and cooking hot...

Re: Wood Pigeons AAArrrrggghhh!!!

Yes, maybe they are a different breed. Our wood pigeons are huge and beautiful, but I've never heard them make a sound. They make a whoosh whoosh sound when flying overhead. Plenty of tuis,...

Re: Opinions please!!

Yes, the decile level can sometimes work in your favour. When my sons were little they started school in a lower school and then moved to a higher one. When we were looking round the school my son...

Re: PALMERSTON NORTH

Yes, John Cleese is the culprit.
However, it does rain a lot, and when I was trying to persuade my family to move there, they would pont out the weather forecast each day. It can be under a big...
