Re: Cars in Canada ?

You're right, this is getting nasty and this will be my last post on the subject. My intention is not to flame, but I will point out logical errors and fallacies when I see them. Smuggling in...

Re: Cars in Canada ?

What's with all the pejorative language? "Shoebox"? "Casket"? It doesn't exactly advance your case.

Actually, the popular definition of "driver's car" does emphasize handling. The SL500 isn't...

Re: Cars in Canada ?

Nothing is a guarantee of anything. You could equally say that the extra mass of an SUV is no guarantee against a fatal or disabling crash. I prefer to stack the odds against the accident...

Re: Cars in Canada ?

You can't seriously be advancing an SUV as a "driver's car", can you? I've never heard that one before. A Miata is a driver's car. A BMW is a driver's car.

Your power/torque argument is...

Re: Cars in Canada ?

Yes, that's why I like small, nimble cars that are easy to keep under control. I pay attention to the road and keep my car in top shape. The most survivable crash is one that never happens.

Re: Cheaper Cars?

Hmm, that's too bad. I seem to remember reading it in the Lemon-Aid guide a while ago. Being from Nova Scotia, it didn't help me at the time :) Maybe it used to be the case...

Re: Cheaper Cars?

I seem to recall that there is no PST (or GST, can't remember which one) chargeable on private sales in Ontario. Might be something worth thinking about.

Re: Cars in Canada ?

iaink is absolutely right here. I've driven trucks before and I can't imagine why anyone would want to punish themselves by commuting in one. Clumsy, precarious and slow are some words that come to...

Re: Static electicity - how to avoid?

I was always suspicious of those rubber strap thingies on cars. After all, asphalt isn't conductive unless it's covered in water. Anyway, what you're worried about isn't the potential of the car...

Re: Traction Control

First: studded tires are legal everywhere except Ontario. They make the biggest difference on glare ice at the expense of dry traction (and noise).

It's worth getting a set of cheapo steel wheels...

Re: where to go?

My advice: go where the job is. Everywhere looks nicer with money, and anywhere can be bleak and desperate without it.

Re: What kinda motor do you drive?

I'm answering several posts in here, please forgive the incoherence :)

Whenever I'm driving a van or truck, I always feel *less* safe because of how clumsy the vehicle is -- how much you have to...

Re: Where to move to in Canada?

If you want a big Chinese population, Vancouver or the GTA would be your best bets. I believe that Canada has a higher per-capita Chinese population than the US, and most cities should have...

Re: Finding English speaking regions for job search

I'd say: don't bother. It will usually specify in the ad if they want bilingual or French-speakers. Also, if the ad's in French, this will be a hint..

Cutting out Quebec will cut you out of...

Re: Mac building question

You can build a Mac from bits, but you have to be very careful about which bits you get and it's often not worth the effort. Apple likes to change the motherboard form factor and connector pinouts...

Re: Siding ...

I personally hate vinyl siding, it always seems to make a house look tacky. If you don't want wood, Home Depot has this stuff called "fibre cement" which looks a lot better, might want to look into...

Re: Forced Air/Natural Gas Heating

Power outages were pretty common in Halifax when I was growing up. They often got me days off school.

Most seem to be caused by freezing rain, which might help explain why they're not that common...

Just thought I'd mention -- it seems to take around two years to get settled in a new country. When I moved to the Netherlands, the first year was absolute hell (and I was going there to a job).

I'm with Iaink on this. SUVs and trucks don't really buy you any extra mobility, except in very deep snow. Road clearing is quite aggressive in Canada, so unless you're planning on driving up...

Re: Saint John, New Brunswick

I've never lived in St. John, but it doesn't look too inspiring when driving through. Still, a job is a job and the people are probably nice. Property's probably cheap too.

If the Jensen is more than 15 years old (I believe they all are), then you can import it. I don't think you'll have to pay tax or duty on it either, because you've owned it for more than a year.

Hi there,

All Canadian houses have central heating and are usually much more heavily insulated than in the UK. A modern house can have quite reasonable heating costs, while an old, leaky house...
