Re: NYE Festivities

The point I was making was that he didn't mind us not paying what the meter said given the journey wasn't on, even though he'd driven us about half a mile.

Re: NYE Festivities

Escaped rainy Jeddah for a long New Year's week-end in Dubai.

Agree with many of the posts above regarding overhyped NYE - but decided to venture out this year, which merely confirmed why it's...

Re: Offshore Banks - why?!

Sure, as non-res you can fill out the form and get your interest on UK savings gross (free of tax).

BUT - That does not mean you are not liable to pay tax on them. You still have to do an annual...

Re: Possibly moving to "the kingdom" need some advice

The major issue I see is the rotation - 2 weeks in the UK every 6 weeks right?

That means about 120 days/year in the UK - you will struggle to demonstrate that you are non-resident based on the '4...

Re: The Ultimate Guide to Dubai

Oi 2

Stages of repair work:

Visit 1. Man comes to look at what is needed, even though you have explained in detail.

Visit 2. Man comes back with man who will actually do the repair to look...

Re: Jeddah work for women ?

It's not going to be easy.

However, there is railway and metro construction in the offing/underway (hard to judge the exact status from the PR news articles) in the Jeddah/Makkah/Medinah triangle....

Re: Silver Sands Beach Jeddah - Shameful experience today

Not so sure...

There are some nice beaches to the south of Jeddah and great Red Sea diving to be had.

Also, the mountains nearby, they get enough rain to be green and lush, and an interesting...

Re: Silver Sands Beach Jeddah - Shameful experience today

Ah! ....OK. Thought you were putting it forward as an alternative beach in Jeddah.

I'll give it a miss. The place only looks good for washing your dirty stuff, and I'd have to find a somewhat...

Looks great!

What are the driving directions from Jeddah, and how long will it take (to the nearest 5 minutes say)?

Re: Silver Sands Beach Jeddah - Shameful experience today

If you are looking for 'customer service', KSA is not the place to be.

The incident seems entirely typical of what tends to happen here. It goes with the territory. Roll with it.

Re: Help for Next Week

A Palestinian girl was knocked down and badly injured by a quad a few days ago.

Both quads (and donkeys) were conspicuous by their absence last night.

Still some idiot in a car driving down the...

Re: Help for Next Week

I run on side streets parallel to Palestine Street to the central corniche - it's about 2km. Sides streets are quieter, but not as well lit - look out for random holes and sewage spills!

From the...

Re: Help for Next Week

I was out running on the central corniche in Jeddah yesterday evening - still quite humid!

You don't see many people out running and it's best to dress modestly as you will be weaving amongst the...

Re: Is Saudi-Arabia a tax free country?

You appear to be heading to Riyadh, whereas Ellie is up in the Asir mountains.

It's a bit like taking the views of someone who lives in the Lake District before moving to London.

Indeed - People seem to be expecting some big city style nightlife in Doha as is found in Bahrain and Dubai.

I spent two very happy years in Doha in the late 90s, where socialising revolved...
