Help for Next Week
Guys and Gals from the Magic Kingdom,
I'm in Saudi next week from Saturday Night till Wednesday. I am training for the Marathon and want to keep up my training. I want to run on Saturday night in RUH and on Monday in JED. I'm staying at the Khozama in RUH and the Movenpick in JED. Think it will be OK to run along the corniche in JED but would love some advice for Saturday in RUH. Last resort is the Gym but I hate treadmills.
Also I'll be there in all three main locations for one week a month and would love some ideas for any social activities etc but the running is the main issue just now.
Cheers and Thanks
Mike

I think you are a very brave or ???? man to even think of running here in Riyadh.
The traffic has gotten a lot worse since eid.
The raods and basic Infustuture here is not for running.
Now if you can get out of town some where then fine.
But the roads and the lighting is poor,
The Al K gym is a good one I used to know the sports manager there.
Jeddah isnt a problem plenty of space, but Riyadh !!!!

You don't see many people out running and it's best to dress modestly as you will be weaving amongst the picnickers - 'T' top and track or 3/4 length bottoms. I wouldn't recommend running vest/shorts, but who knows?
I use the central corniche because it's relatively close to where I stay so I can run from my door. The Movenpick Jeddah - the one on Madinah Road right? That's possible if you know the way - there is a footbridge over Madinah road near the hotel, then side streets to the corniche. However, if you are not too familiar with Jeddah, then plan to taxi, plenty about, and the north corniche (Hilton Hotel) would be the best bet for a long run. Should be SAR 20/30 in the taxi to get there, but you will be lucky!!

BB cheers for that, I have run the Corniche in Khobar which is quite nice. Yes that is the Movenpick that i'm in. So over the foot bridge and down the side streets, if i don't get kidnapped i should be OK otherwise you'll see me on Al Jazeera chained to a radiator lol. The Hotel is next to our office but not the best hotel. Might try out by the Hilton Corniche if I get doen in time.I'm driving this time in Jeddah done RUH a few time so i should be OK I know they are mad.
T Shirt and baggy shorts should be OK but its looking like the Gym in Khozama for Saturday night.
Thanks for the help.

The Australian Embassy would like to remind all Australians in Saudi Arabia that the current travel advice remains "Reconsider your need to travel" due to the very high threat of terrorist attack.
We continue to receive credible reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a range of targets, including places frequented by foreigners, such as residential compounds, embassies, international organisations and businesses. Other possible terrorist targets also include places where foreigners are known to work, clubs, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, markets, pedestrian promenades, schools, places of worship, transportation and transport infrastructure, airports and aircraft, outdoor recreation and sporting events and cultural activities, resorts or tourist areas, oil installations and oil infrastructure.
Symbols and buildings associated with the Saudi Government and security forces are also possible targets.
This means that if you are already in Saudi Arabia, you should exercise extreme caution. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time, anywhere in Saudi Arabia. In planning your activities, consider the kind of places known to be terrorist targets and the level of security provided.
The full Travel Advice for Saudi Arabia is available on www.smartraveller.gov.au.
Please feel free to pass this on to fellow Australians and encourage them to register. We strongly recommend that you register your travel and contact details with us, so we can contact you in an emergency.

Re: Help for Next Week
I run on side streets parallel to Palestine Street to the central corniche - it's about 2km. Sides streets are quieter, but not as well lit - look out for random holes and sewage spills!
From the Movenpick, I guess it's 3km plus depending on the route.
The footbridge is right at the hotel, you could turn left off it and get onto Palestine Street and then a parallel side street to the front, however, the short Madinah Road stretch has no pavement, just a wall of concrete barriers as it is in front of a Ministry. There is a road you could head west on before this, but it usually has a barrier on it further down due to the Ministry.
If you go right off the footbridge, head north up Madinah alongside a strip mall, then left onto a side road at the 'Al Baik' chicken fast-food franchise, red sign. (Jeddah's answer to KFC.)
After a while there is a sort-of 'Y' junction, go left, to a sort-of large roundabout, go right then follow your nose to the corniche. Check out google earth
Jeddah HHH meets on Thursday afternoons. Never been able to attend because I am at work then - think it is more of a family thin , but worth a look.
There are some road runners, and the odd event here, but it seems to be compound based and I have not been able to establish any contacts.
I street run and run along the corniche frequently, and walk about in the evenings around the districts between Al Hamra and Al Balad - No problems; I would not do that in many areas of Manchester.
Yes you have to be alert to security issues - but advice such as 'expect attacks anywhere at anytime' is of little use, and I've never been one to hunker down inside a compound.

Cheers for the Info. Will let you know how I get on.
I like the Corniche and the Quad bikes and Donkeys are an eye opener.

Re: Help for Next Week
Both quads (and donkeys) were conspicuous by their absence last night.
Still some idiot in a car driving down the corniche pavement though!!

Re: Help for Next Week
I stayed at the Intercon on my first visit and went for a walk down the Corniche as I like to do when i'm in a new place. The donkeys being ridden down the main road was a bit starnge and taking a picture of the big Humvee outside the hotel and seeing the bloke pointing the big gun at me was frightening.
