Wouldn't it be cheaper and less traumatic to consider doing something to improve the house?
- secondary glazing (as ugly as it is!)
- proper insulation in lofts
- maybe a cavity insulation thingy?...

To rule out some issues, any chance you can try it with a windows PC. Our 3 dongle needed to run the installer *twice* to operate. But if the device was already working under linux then it shouldn't...
