Seems to be a modern day thing, ever since HR became a department. The body hire mobs in europe in the 70,s were great.Have a first interview and then a telegram to say tickets waiting at Newcastle airport, fly to such and such in the morning.

Once you were in then you would meet people in bars, get numbers from them and give them a call if you fancied a change.Usually it was jump on the train and be in such and such one or two days later, give me a call and I'll get you picked up at the station to go to your to your new job,and fix you up for fares etc.

My favourite was an Irishman called Wolfgang.Rang a number and he said have you got two mates I need 3 people in Stuttgart.Organised 2 mates and rang him back 15 mins later.Get the o/night sleeper train from D/dorf to Stuttgart he said. Then get the S bahn 6 and get off at Esslingen,a girl will meet you there at 10AM.Give it a go we thought.

All occured as he said, same girl turned up every week with the wages for 10 months or so,gave us plane tickets home for Xmas and then we went back after Xmas.Turned up at work on Monday morning and all hell broke loose. He hadn't been paying taxes and insurance in Germany,The foreman had been arguing to keep us on but the owner of the company wanted us out of Germany as quick as possible as he thought we were in on it.Gave us a letter from W/gang,"sorry lads, had to get out in a hurry, you understand. If we meet again I'll fix you up for fares and a beer.Meanwhile ring this number and you'll probably get a gig in Hamburg.I've put a word in for you. Thanks and good luck." W/gang.Never met the guy once and never found out who the girl was.

The body hire mobs were just as good here when they started. You'd take holidays and they would fix you up for 2 or 3 weeks work, new in the country so trying to get money up for the start up costs etc. Then they would never leave you alone, trying to get you to do 3 or 4 days here and there or a weekend somewhere else on a shutdown.Sick of telling them it was just a one off period to get some money up.

Ever since HR depts came in it all went down the tubes. One of the body hire mobs in Perth wanted a supervisor with 1796 cert 10 (a welding qual that is needed and in short supply).I thought I would give it a go for a change ,and work full time for a few months.

Called them and a young girl answered.Told her I had everything and she was happy. Now she says,I need a full resume and 4 referees.I'm not writing out what I've done for the last 38 yrs says I.You must she says, full resume.I'll fax a copy of my cert 10 and other things you'll need says I.Told her I was old school and if they weren't happy they could lay me off after two weeks no problems. She waffled on again so I just put the phone down.

Ever since HR depts came in it seems that they do everything they can not to employ people.A mate is high up in the UK in a large engineering company, they cannot get tradesmen and as a joke I said I'd go over on a working holiday. That would be great he said but I could never get you through the anti personnel dept (HR) without your grandfathers birth certificate and fathers full war record, and 3 people to vouch for it.

Weird if you ask me.They just cannot seem to get anything right without a commitee and stewards inquiry just in case the commitee aren't on the ball.

Funniest thread I've read in a long time. I tried several - they are all shite! I got my job the old fashioned way. I filled in an application form, attached CV and personal statement saying how wonderfully fabulous I am, got an interview, convinced them I wasnt lying on my application form and Bobs ur uncle..........well actually he isnt - my uncle is called Danny but you know what I mean.

Down with recruitment agencies and all that palarva - DIY is best!!!

Wow... I am loving this thread!

I have had to work through recruitment agencies for the last 3.5 years in London as I'm a contractor. I have built up a really good relationship with a fair few decent set ups... on learning i was heading over to oz one asked if I would consider shifting into recruitment and setting up a branch in oz... reading this I may just do that. Sounds like it might be quite easy to win a load of business by showing them how its really done!

BTW those extautionate rates are there because no-one is challenging them. As far as I am aware indirect procurement in oz is nowhere close to the UK... where 12-15% mark up is the norm and at a push 20-25% but normally for executive searches or retained searches.

@ King Edwards...

Lol. This is terrible, but so true! I put up my CV on seek.com.au and got a bunch of recruiters emailing me, offering to place me with employers. And there was never any follow up after that! Guess I'll have to go at it the old fashioned way then.

Most of the HR depts I've dealt with seem to think the department motto is "Repel Boarders"....

From the sounds of it the Recruiters seem to be worse in Oz than in UK, I have my doubts but the ones I was dealing with here did seem to be mostly on the ball. Though it is a specialist area I was looking into.

I so look forward to my job search....

historic and still current Navy phrase to call to battle stations and prepare to engage the enemy in hand to hand and stop them boarding, so you'd get the pipe of "repel boarders".

Granted, you probably don't hear it too often these days

Well as a Senior HR Manager who specialises in resource planning, I don't necessarily agree.

What complicates matters often for candidates and recruitment sales agents is that there are a number of real factors that go into deciding whether to recruit and indeed finally employ someone.

Cue list in no particular order:
  • Workforce planning/establishment and headcount
  • Departmental structure
  • Departmental budget
  • Organisation workforce plan
  • Need
  • Skill
  • Fit
  • Internal policy
  • Succession planning and development initiatives
  • Recruitment policy
  • Spend on external suppliers
  • Development of own organisational employer brand to name a few

It is not so easy as ''ere Gov, I have the right bloke for you' as the organisation may not have the need for that external candidate at that present time.

Hiring Managers who believe that they have 'special relationships' with certain salespeople are often disappointed by the sloping quality of candidates provided, sometimes having to let good candidates down or retrench fairly new employees due to lack of planning and incorrect hiring decisions.

Organisations are much more interested in considering an external candidate that they may have to find a role for, if the candidate comes to them directly i.e. not having to pay 20% of initial salary to a salesperson makes the candidate more attractive.

I qualify this by adding that I work for very large organisations and employing into small companies and real fast moving/demand led organisations is likely to have less structure.
