Re: One for the Perthites

Kingsley. Great suburb. You'll get something nice for that price.

There are a lot of Brits but they tend to be older ones who have been here 30 years.

Re: Good year to head back to the UK???

I think so much of this depends on where you are in aus and where you were in the uk.

Certainly for us the access to swimming lessons is hugely better in Australia. Winter sports programs are...

Re: Good year to head back to the UK???

Gents, that was one of the funniest to-and-fros I've read all year! Touché to both of you...

Re: Going nuts!

If I were you I'd stay in the UK - at least for another year or so.

Some people adapt quickly but I think, from reading your first post, you might well have a hard time. After 6 years I still...

Re: Superannuation in contract

I always think that total packages constitute a bit of hoodwinking.

What employees want to know is, what is my salary? All employers have to pay superannuation anyhow.

Re: Fear of flying with Garuda..... Am I being stupid?

I felt safe - if that really means anything. I didn't feel particularly safe in a 707 that seemed held together with string between Bali and jakarta.
I think that Garuda are acutely sensitive to...

Re: Perth job offer, AUD1600 dayrate

Are you seriously suggesting that you need to ask if knocking on $200K is enough to live on?

Are you winding us all up? I'm not quite sure how to untangle the irony that someone apparently worth...

Re: When should a 12 year old go to bed ?

We work on about 10 hours sleep. So wake up at 6 means bed at 8.

All kids are different but I reckon less than 10 hours for most kids even teenagers has impacts at school.

I reckon you should...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

It's the uniformity of the middle and outer suburbs that depress me in Perth

At least in the uk those periods of growth - pre WWI, inter war, post war council estates, 80s cul de sacs - led to...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

I don't think you can compare Perth to London or New York. But in terms of physical attraction, which I know is subjective, when I'm looking out on the city and the river from Kings Park or driving...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

I agree. Perth is bloody expensive but although it isn't London it is significantly more beautiful and world class than just about every other UK city. (Apart from Scunthorpe and Nuneaton)

Re: Sainsburys vs Coles Price Comparison

I need some kind of exchange rate to work on...

Re: Sainsburys vs Coles Price Comparison

I'm trying to attach it as a word doc or excel but it keeps saying invalid file.

OK - here it is.

In relation to your question, my gut feeling is that 2.2 seems about right. It was 2.6 when I...

Sainsburys vs Coles Price Comparison

Because I'm particularly sad, I've just spent an entertaining 40 minutes comparing prices between the above two.

I was going to do a large basket but got bored and reduced it in number to 14...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

Sure. And I did talk about my experience. Having lived in 5 different suburbs, if good value markets exist then my experience suggests that they are the exception rather than the norm.

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

I always avoid any wine with Margaret River on the label because of the premium charged.

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

And yet there are still some people who feel that this is some dream scenario because the produce is apparently better from the independents and they are doing some kind of public service by keeping...

The New Improved Coles

Went to Coles for the first time in about a year today.

Very pleasantly surprised. Trolleys that work. Bright lighting, well stocked shelves, lots of tills open and best of all, offers that are...

I realise that there is great subjectivity in determining what is a decent salary but I have been quite taken aback by some posts on here - particularly when the average salary is about half the OP's...

Salary Change Since Arrival

Given the cost of living rises and the suggestion that a lot of migrants seem to take pay cuts initially, I thought it would be interesting to see what happens to migrant salaries over time.

You...

Re: Whats the worst beer you've ever tasted.

Anything with "Carlton" in the title tastes like it was brewed in a test tube.
