My eldest is 13 and goes to bed around 9pm. If she has a ton of schoolwork then it may get pushed to 9.30pm so she has some wind down time. She is up around 5am a few mornings a week for rowing training. Weekends we don't impose a bedtime and she is usually in bed no later than 10pm.

Not the old my friends can go to bed at the time or whenever they want to story.......
My 12 and 11 year olds are in bed at 8.30 and lights out at 9pm, however they are both up at 6am so they are tired by that time.

We work on about 10 hours sleep. So wake up at 6 means bed at 8.
All kids are different but I reckon less than 10 hours for most kids even teenagers has impacts at school.
I reckon you should be guided by what happens after lights out.
If after a week of early nights they are still shuffling around in their room and they wake up easily in the morning then push back bedtime.

A twelve year old shouldn't go to bed until it has:
Cleaned out the hearth, polished the grate, re-laid the fire for the morning, done the dinner dishes, laid the table for breakfast and swept and mopped the kitchen floor.

Our 12 yo son generally goes to bed school nights 9-930pm but will often still be awake an hour later. He has no problem getting up in the mornings, he just does not need the sleep I guess.
The `17 yo is a different story altogether though & boy don't we know when he's tired!
We have friends with 11 & 12 yo boys who are in bed by 8pm but they get up at 5am. Everyone is different!

My 11 year old goes to bed at 9pm on school nights and gets up at 7.20 the following morning.
She quite often isn't asleep until 10pm though.
Weekends and holidays she can stay up later.
I agree with the 10 hours sleep rule so it will depend what time they need to get up.
