Does anyone have any suggestions re banking - if I wanted to close my UK a/c but keep some money in sterling?

Nationwide now charging for debit card withdrawals so any suggestions would be great....

I think like other posters stated it is going to be difficult if not impossible without a visa. I applied for my PR when I was 44 and given that it takes a while it can still be granted...
