I think it will still cost you as much if not more in fees. But since the spouse is already in the UK, the process is much quicker. You can pay extra for a very quick decision.

I think everyone has their own view. I am a UK tax payer and I don't think HO should be making a profit, especially on family applications.

I read somewhere that for schengen visa they advise abut £50-60 per day but for UK there doesn't seem to be any specific number mentioned.

I am not from an EU country but when I applied for my first UK passport, I didn't have to provide address proof. I just had to send my foreign passport and naturalisation certificate.
