Yep

Brought a fax machine here to Oz from the UK which sends and recieves OK but doesn't actually 'pick up' a call which is pretty useless as it's an answerphone/fax so that's been disconnected...

As with the other replies - your equipment will work here as the voltages are the same but Australia uses different carriers for picture and sound to the UK - also in some places VHF is used to...

We used John Mason from UK (Bedfordshire) to Adelaide for our 3 bed medium sized house. We JUST managed to get everything in but had already got rid of stuff like the TV, washing machine, fridge etc....
