Default Shipping Furniture

We arrived in Oz early May. We brought no furniture of any sort with us.
I would advise thought on shipping.
Let me give you something to compare costs.
I live near the Gold Coast.
We got new beds when we arrived here.
2 x single + mattresses
2 x double + mattresses
1 x king size + mattress.
Total cost of beds $1660
new 34" stereo TV $800
DVD Players from $99
DVD Video combo $399

Furniture....check.... http://www.superamart.com.au/
Electrical....check... http://www.chandlers.com.au/

remember these prices are Oz dollars so 6 beds and mattresses cost us approx
£700.... not bad. go to your local town and try to match that.

Also there is the power of cash here... cash will nearly always get you a
discount.

Not telling you all to get rid of everything you own but just giving you
something to think about.

We have been here almost 3 months and not regretted a minute of it.
got a lovely house after being here a week and the kids in school a week
later.
Wife pregnant with 5th sprog due in December and I start my first Aussie job
on Monday with a 3 month probation period at $21 /hour. not too bad as we
have been paying $250 week rent and spending $250 per week to bills and food
and fuel and beer. Admittedly we where not living like kings but we had to
make money last as we where not sure when work would appear.

Good luck to everyone in the system at the moment. ( it is worth the wait )

Bye

Glad to hear you are doing well & nice to hear its worth the wait!
Prices like that I can see why the Bloke is telling me to get rid of my stuff here and we will buy anything extra we need once I get there.
Are the kids settled into school OK? Haven't any personally but I know a lot of people on here wonder how their kids will cope.

Sorry about the top posting but this is a VERY good example to look at for
people who wants to take the kitchen sink with them to Australia.
I came here 21 years ago with a suitcase and a toolbox and I have never ever
regretted it. Pretty pointless paying good money shipping all the old stuff
over if it's going to cost more than the second hand stuff is worth when you
can buy brand new, much better stuff locally.

Hi you! (me!)

We are looking to move to Brisbane when/if we get a visa.

Just wondered if you got any quotes for shipping your stuff which then persuaded you to leave it all behind and buy new on arrival?

Andy.

No, I never intended to take anything with me so I never bothered to get any
quotes. The way I looked at it, I was starting a new life so I wanted to
start fresh.
I only took a suitcase and my toolbox basically.
Mind you, that was 21 years ago now. But I would still do the same thing,
even more so today.

Which is a lot less than the typical family would spend replacing good
quality possessions from scratch.

You will hear different views on this. Mine is that you should leve
junk behind, plus things that are impractical to take, but bring
everything else.

Agreed

We brought all the main bits of furniture and whatever we could get into the container. It was all packed and arranged by John Mason who did an excellent job for a little over £3000.

Apart from anything else we didn't want the hassle of trying to get rid of all our gear in the UK 'for a song' plus when we moved into our new house we had the added 'comfort factor' of familiar furniture and odds and ends. Another bonus is rediscovering possessions. Sounds daft but it's quite exciting opening boxes and finding your temporarily forgotten personal effects.

Cheers,

MAX
