Re: Teachers Beware

I'm not sure, its all very very new. To be honest, if I was coming over now, i don't think I would get a licence.

Well, NZ has not exactly been kind to me, I am hoping I get a break soon.

In summary:

4 days after I arrived in 2013 My mum was diagnosed with cancer. She told me 6 weeks later (so's not to...

Post Teachers Beware

Just a heads up for teachers considering coming over.

The teaching council restructured this year and is now called the education council. With that came a whole load of new policies and laws and...

Re: Life style compare uk to nz

Depends on your definition of better. NZ has a more outdoors sporty lifestyle which suits me, but social life is very very different. I don't mind, as I am in my 40's but younger people might miss...

Re: End of year2: almost as difficult as year 1

Thank you Hazelenut. Those are very kind words. I hope you achieve your move this year. I don't think I should go back, but such a move was always going to be very difficult, even without the other...

Re: End of year2: almost as difficult as year 1

Thanks Snap Shot. It's a tough road, I am now pursuing happiness and nothing more. Money doesn't buy that.

Thumbs down End of year2: almost as difficult as year 1

year 2 in New Zealand

At the end of my first year in New Zealand I didn’t think there could possibly be a year that was worse: losing mum just weeks after I left England, and only 2 weeks after I...

Re: How to settle into NZ life?

Hi there, and welcome.

I have been here 21 months, and when I first arrived I landed alone, hubby was still in the UK finishing off the house sale.

I knew no one, and had never been to South...

Re: Missing friend and family.

*hugs*

First year or two even, is quite tough. (I have been here 21 months), Think about what you just did, you changed almost everything about your life, all at once. I found it hard hard hard a...

Re: open return flights

Was just going to say that.

On a visitors visa you need to prove that you are leaving within the allotted time schedule. Even with a residency visa I have to prove I have authority to return when...

Re: time between references and job offer (or not as case may be)?

Employers here are a bit of a nightmare. Some are really prompt, most are not. It can take weeks or sometimes months. Sometimes they have the courtesy to tell you haven't been successful, more often...

Re: All possible costs for relocating/emigrating to New Zealand

I still have my UK life ins. They said it was still valid if I emigrated.

I got a NZ licence as soon as I got here. It's painless, and only involved a visit to the AA, 5 mins of my time and $50....

Thumbs down Re: emergency flights

Here here.

Even the very next flight wasn't soon enough for me. Go sooner than you think you have to. I kept a UK CC open too for emergencies.

:fingerscrossed: for you.

Re: All possible costs for relocating/emigrating to New Zealand

Don't get a contract. I still use my UK mobile (unlocked iPhone 4s) on a pay as you go sim, my bill is 1/2 what it was in the UK, and I use the phone in exactly the same way.

Re: Health insurance and pre-existing conditions

I have found one like that but I was told that degenerative issues are still exempt from cover. Is that the case with Southern cross?

Re: Do you feel valued in your nz job ?

Nope. There is some discrimination in the work place and employers don't like to take risks. Management skills aren't as sharp as in UK IMO either. NZ job market is an entirely different ball game...

Re: advice from those who are in the know..... Please

You sound a bit like you're at the exploration stage and have some decisions to make to get more specific answers. I live at the bottom of South Island if you want to know anything specifically.

Re: emergency flights

I just went into my local flight centre and they got me one the next day, when my mum was critically ill. I also got partial refund due to bereavement.

Re: Health insurance and pre-existing conditions

That's exactly what I fear bEVS. Seems there's no way out because even if the knee was fine, they exclude degenerative conditions in health insurance
