Steve, in my experience many jobs in NZ get advertised before budget funding approval has been received to cover those roles i.e. they are newly established positions. Managers often jump the gun and start the recruitment process only to have the rug pulled by the Finance Dept in many instances.

I'm not saying this is the case in your situation, but be prepared for many fob-off emails delaying your offer till the budgets are approved.

It's all sounding very familiar and my cynical self would say; who the heck is on leave for two weeks this close to Christmas?

Whatever 'latish December' means, I can tell you there won't be very many people working past Friday, 19th December and then there's not a hope of getting anything done until after 5th January at best.

Thanks Bo,
I understand what you are saying.

They wanted somebody to start in January.
At this rate it will be mid-Feb to March before I can get there.

As others have said, not unusual for New Zealand to wait that long so impossible to read anything into it. Good luck with the application!

I would hope you are not banking on it happening and still looking at other opportunities. The biggest issue to IMO will be the de facto shut down that happens from the end of December to around the middle of January.

Agreed. They have given you information explaining the delay which sounds very reasonable to me. I also agree with the suggestion to keep looking. Always good to keep your options open until you have a firm offer.

Employers here are a bit of a nightmare. Some are really prompt, most are not. It can take weeks or sometimes months. Sometimes they have the courtesy to tell you haven't been successful, more often than not they just don't bother.

Sometimes I have had a letter saying bad luck up to three months later. Erm, yeah that's, I had worked that out already!

There is just no way of knowing.

Sometimes there just wasn't even a job in the first place. I have seen ads that have actually said that within the ad!

Sometimes it makes no difference if you chase or not, sometimes they see you as a pushy Pom.

It's all a horrid waiting game.

Ain't that the truth ! It gets no less horrid as the years go by. In February we'll have been in NZ for four years.

Job Search - Job interview (or not) - wait for result - inevitable turn down either by being advised or by long silence gets no easier, certainly no less frustrating as the years go by.

Although today I start doing voluntary work. I applied for this job in mid October, it's now getting on for mid December, I've been accepted for the role and I've been asked to go to morning tea this morning to meet the other volunteers. Believe me this is NOT a stealth boast.

I've got to do something to keep the boredom at bay whilst I'm on the seemingly endless treadmill of applying for paid employment. It seems that a lot of companies won't arrange any interviews so close to the Christmas/summer holidays. The school terms are ending for summer/Christmas holidays next week. A lot of businesses seem to follow their lead for some reason. So much for the, 'December sprint' that I was once advised of when I did a short stint of employment for a local authority here in NZ. Which in it's turn closed for business the Friday before Christmas !

I've been given the timetable for sift/interviews etc for a job I've applied for at our local council offices. They reckon interview candidates will be advised on Christmas Eve whether they are to be interviewed for the job early in the new year. I've been interviewed for three separate roles at our local council offices over the years of living here and been turned down each time. I've got to keep trying to get legitimate, 'family friendly' paid work anywhere I suppose.

NZ Bro.

Good luck Steve, at least you're home.

Yes we will still be in the UK for Christmas at least.

There is that on the plus side.
