time between references and job offer (or not as case may be)?
An Auckland company asked for and has been supplied with references. Including the 'conversational' reference they were hoping to get.
Since then I've heard nothing (it's been over a week).
Does anyone know how long these things usually take?

sorry Steve that's like asking how long a piece of string is I'm afraid. All down to the individual person and/or Company. lets just say lots of reports of how slow things can be over here

Crikey, only a week? This is a laid back country for laid back people doncha know.
Things take their time down here and most businesses operate in slo-mo especially where jobs and other potentially life changing situations are at stake. My firm have had a guy dangling around on a very long tether at various stages of recruitment since the first interview in July - utterly ridiculous but it should give you a measure to the type of firm that you are dealing with and what you might expect from them as your potential future employer.

Thanks Bo.
I hope things don't stretch that long.

Well , I shall keep my fingers and toes for you that it is a positive response.
I can't offer any thought as to whether pro-actively persuing is a good idea or not.
Perhaps someone may have experience of this in your type of job market.
Horrid though, to be left dingle-dangling.

I don't think there's a right answer. Since it's been 2 weeks I'd flick them a message. We had to badger the new boss sometimes as they seem lil too laid back

Hi mate
I have secured a job in Tauranga and the references bit was a proper nightmare I think it it took around 3 weeks to get my two references contactable etc. Then once they had been spoken to, i still didn't hear for a while and then got a phone call one night a week later

Re: time between references and job offer (or not as case may be)?
My husband had first interview in Wellington (we were living in Christchurch at the time), followed by second interview in the town where the job is based a week later. This was around mid May 2011.
He gave them his 2 referees to contact. They then came back and wanted a third reference. So, my husband scratched his head and contacted someone else where he worked for the third and final reference.
His boss then remembered that the job needed to be gazetted. This gazette comes our every two weeks in the NZ Government Department concerned and his boss had missed the deadline. So my husband's appointment was put in for the very next edition of this, 'gazette'. It's done just in case anyone wishes to raise an objection to an appointment of someone.
They offered him the job about three weeks later. He started his job about three weeks after that. (This was to allow us time to relocate from Christchurch i.e. reconnaissance to Wanganui to find a house to rent, arrange the removal company, get packed up, get our flights organised, move into the rental, etc etc)

Well...I went and did it.
I've emailed them asking how it's progressing and if they need or want any more information.
I figured that way i could be nosy & helpful at the same time.

The employers often ask for the references of all shortlisted applicants.

Re: time between references and job offer (or not as case may be)?
The latest email from my potential employer stated that:
"...the application is still processing.
I am completing some funding applications and then we should be able to complete the offer probably latish December all going well.."
Does anyone have any idea what they could mean by funding.
I can't ask directly because the author of the quote has gone on leave for 2 weeks.
