Re: Quantity Surveying

Hi Gav, I'm still with the company that brought me out here 3 years ago. They were bringing people out when there was a mining/construction boom. I have had plenty of offers to go elsewhere,...

Re: Quantity Surveying

I'm a contractor QS. I'm not really sure what you would be trying to achieve by retaking the full degree. I don't think they even do a QS degree here as it is quite a new role for Australia. I know...

Re: FIFO work

Our mine ERT team is made up of volunteers from the workforce as verystormy has said. It is headed by the client so I don't know if they a full time ERT person, I know they certainly don't have a...

Re: Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

Well just to give you an update I picked the family up Sunday morning and they were all bright eyed and bushy taled. My wife said she had been looked after very well. Nothing was too much trouble...

Re: Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

Well Malaysia Airlines is booked. 1 Adult, 1 child and 1 infant. Manchester to Adelaide, one 4 hours stop in KL. I'm pretty nervous about it I must admit. Friday night they go. $2990 it cost, next...

Re: FIFO work

Who you working for Steve - JHG?

I could have done the FIFO on the RoyHill job with BGC, but we were having a baby as it was about to start, I ended up on a residential job in South Australia. I...

Re: Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

Are they generally a good airline aside from the two recent tragedies? We normally fly Emirates but the flights are through the roof at the moment for when we want to go. Are they comparable to them?

Re: Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

Thanks for your replies, if it were me I would probably book them no problem, but it is the wife and kids coming back to me. I'm nervous when they do it alone as it is and this just amplifies it...

Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

It's about 1/2 of the price of any other when I want to fly from Manchester to Adelaide. What do you all think considering recent events? I've never flown with them before.

Re: Civil Engineering Job Market in Australia

I am aware of the HS2 and yes that's probably why there is plenty of work in the UK. As for Sydney, you are also probably right for rail work. I am not going to risk moving my family though from a...

Re: Ex British soldier looking to move to Australia

As for mining - it's not great at the minute. The Iron Ore price which is Australia's biggest export, is at a 5 year low. A lot of mines are closing or have closed due to that.
Coal may be different...

Re: Welder looking to move to Australia

Came from UK in Jan 2012. Working in Whyalla, South Australia. I'm not sure what a coded pipe welder is, i'm an office boy. The boilermaker here I would say is equivalent to a metal fabricator in the...

Re: Civil Engineering Job Market in Australia

I'm a civil QS. The big rail job I was on stopped so I was moved to a mine. Mining for me is boring. There are some civils jobs but I think you would struggle being a junior and not having Australian...

Re: Welder looking to move to Australia

On our mine site you'd be looking (as a boilermaker?) at about $40 per hour.

Re: Australia is too bloody far away....from everything

Interesting thread, we also think Australia, and everywhere in it is too far away from everything else. I am sick of spending weekends in the car!

Re: Melbourne or Perth

I've lived in Perth, and visited Melbourne a few times. If your choice is based on location alone (ie not costs of living/job prospects) then I would say Melbourne would be my definite choice.

Re: Posting medicine to UK

I'm just wondering where it will be checked, here or UK? If UK I guess they will just destroy it if they don't like what it is. But if it is here could I get into trouble?!

As someone who is involved in recruiting, your situation depends on the other candidates. If you were the best hands down, we could accommodate your request. But if you were on par, the other person...

Re: Bose sounddock 10

I've seen and heard that one it looks (sounds) good. I'm a bit dubious as to whether Samsung could make a good valve system though!

Not bad at $489 or something at JB Hifi.
