Why not try Bunac or another similar volunteer program that allows you to spend a few months in the US? It's great fun and can change your life (I met my USC husband that way). :)

Sorry, yes - he did have to be in the country for 3 years. (You don't have to physically stay in the UK for the entire 3 years - you can go abroad for up to 270 days).
