Re: CIMA to Canada - Please help!

OP,
I've just converted my UK ACA qualification to an Alberta CPA, CA designation. The process itself was fairly easy, but the Alberta accounting institutes have recently merged and I don't think...

Re: Might have cold feet....

It was a bit of both. Due to some family circumstances, we didn't want to move over in 2010 (when we got PR), and the PR actually came through about a year earlier than we expected when we applied.

Re: Might have cold feet....

I'd think many, if not most, people get cold feet at some time in the process. From first application to getting PR took about 4 years in our case (which I think was fairly normal at the time), and...

Re: Managing family trips back home

I'd guess this is a very personal thing. I've been back once since we arrived in mid 2012; my wife has been back twice and is about to go again. Her parents are a lot older and infirm than mine and...

Re: Permanent Resident Card renewal

Interesting - I'm sure that a month or so ago it said don't apply more than six months out in both places. I was wondering how CIC would deal with the lengthening processing time. It seems they've...

Re: pr to citizenship

Record all of your trips made outside of Canada re citizenship eligibility.

+1 on recording all trips. I have a colleague at work who has delayed applying for citizenship as he can't face the...

Re: PR Card Renewal

Because I may need to go to the UK at short notice and I'd prefer to come back with an unexpired PR card.

PR Card Renewal

So, the current processing time for a renewal of a PR card is 177 days, and it seems to be increasing. In the instruction guide it states that any applications sent more than 180 before the current...

Re: Mentioning PR during interview

For what it's worth I've just hired a guy who is currently here in an IEC visa and who is looking to get PR in due course. We asked him about his plans and he was quite open about the fact that he...

Re: PR card renewal

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I have an additional question on PR Card renewal.

One of my UK passports covering the period since I landed (Jun 2010) also covers quite a while before that....

Re: Considering moving back to UK after 38 years in Canada

By my calculations you were about 45 when you left the UK so I assume that you have a UK state pension. I think that when you go back any index linking that you haven't received while in Canada will...

Re: Calgary ACCA

We moved out here about 2 years ago, me with an ACA qualification and Controller experience. I had no trouble getting a job, and apart some tax knowledge I've not felt the need to get a Canadian...

Re: Citizenship application and physical presence

I'm curious as to how to interpret this. Does it mean that under the current rules I should wait until I've been in Canada for 4 years as a PR. My plan was to apply for citizenship after I'd been...

Re: Thinking of Canada - advice please!

"cramped living conditions here in the uk (our garden is the size of a postage stamp!)"

Interesting comment. When we first started looking at houses in/around Calgary we thought all the gardens...

Re: Another QROPS Question!

Just out of curiosity - how does the MMRC collect this 55% penalty.

If I'm no longer in the UK, and not receiving any income over there, and my pension funds have already been transferred into a...

Re: Any AAT's / Accountants who've made it to Canada?

I can't speak to AAT, but as a UK qualified ACA I had little difficulty finding a job in Calgary. I know it will delay any move to Canada, but you may wnat to look at qualifying as an ACA or ACCA in...

Re: Got PR cards through....now stuck between a rock and a hard place. Advice please?

We were in exactly the same position when we moved to Calgary approx 2 years ago.

We stayed in a motel for the first 2 weeks and spent a lot of that time looking for a rental. In view of the...

Re: T1135 Foreign Income Verificiation (New Form)

Re: Leaving family behind..

I have to agree with the previous posts that it's your life.

I don't have kids but still felt guilty about leaving, and still do to some extent. Recently my brother was diagnosed with a long...

We did this six moths ago, having been in Canada for a year. Everything was done by email and scanned documents apart from signing the actual contract which was couriered both ways.

Whole process...

Re: Moving to canada.. Wise choice?

To the OP,

I don't think horseracing is a big thing in Canada, certainly we've been in Calgary for about 18 months now and I've never heard of any racing on a commercial scale similar to the UK. ...

Re: applied for citizenship but PR expires soon

As noted above consider the difference between PR & the PR card.

Provided you've met the residency requirements and not been involved in anything criminal then Permanent Residency is exactly that...

Re: Advice on Homesickness please? :(

I say this with some hesitation as it could backfire and make the problem worse. With that in mind, one thing I have found that helps is to try to make a few friends who are also UK expats, and...

Re: House sale Thoughs?

I'd think very carefully about renting it out. We did this for a year after we moved over, and we had some very good tenants. Despite that there were a few different bills we had to pay (basically...
