Re: Rural(ish) affordable lifestyle commuting distance to London...any ideas?

Orkney property has gone up in price too, but you would still get plenty for your money. I don't know about the commute though - flying to London costs about £250 return, and by sea and train takes...

Re: Sending a child back to live

Sounds a lot like my daughter, who is 14, who does go to school, but has made not a single friend in Portugal in nearly 2 years. It does your head and your heart in doesn't it? And you have to work...

Re: Straydogs in Portugal

Round our way it is common practice for cute little puppies and kittens to be abandoned on the edge of land belonging to English folk. We acquired one such, 2 days before Christmas last year - but I...

Re: National insurance number

I have been trying to contact the Bank of Scotland today to see if my daughter's account is still active, but couldn't find a phone number for them anywhere. How did you manage it?

Re: Reasons for going and returning...

I'm 53 and made the move to Portugal 2 years ago because my husband wanted to try living in a sunnier climate (he's 11 years younger than me) I lived in Vancouver for a year in my late teens and...

Re: Does the weather in the UK suck eggs & makes you yearn for sunny weather?

Horizontal rain most certainly does exist in Britain - I experienced it 300 days out of 365 for the 6 years we lived on Orkney. There were days when I had to drive my 5 year old the 100m to the...

Re: Going back to school in the UK

A big thank you to the last 2 posters - this is incredibly helpful information! Yes, it is complicated, but it sounds as if you have already done a lot of the necessary leg-work, and that answers a...

Re: Buying a car in the UK by a foreigner

Haven't a clue about Russia but we moved to Portugal - in the EU of course- and found it is illegal to drive around in a car with British plates for longer than 6 months. I doubt if you would get UK...

Re: 3 Year rule regarding UK university

I would agree that it's best to be very, very careful. My daughter told the award-granting authority that she had been staying with her boyfriend for a few weeks over the summer, so they classed her...
