I was in the Arndale centre today, and had a tasty "panini" with an
espresso, near to the Polish food shop. There's also a 'conveyor-belt'
sushi place there now- not one of the chains AFAIK. Also a very good
fruit and veg market, with lots of stuff you'd never have seen a couple
of decades ago. It's not a bad example of how things have changed here,
at least, certainly for anyone who was in the arndale centre in the
early 90s.

Well there was a Polish restaurant where I grew up and there was a huge
Polish community in the UK after WWII.

But it's not a cuisine that's amenable to being messed about with by chefs
who want to use exotic mushrooms and best Scotch beef and vegetables
nobody's ever heard of as it tends towards pork in chunks and dumplings and
fried potatoes and pickled fish and too much fat.

It's not terribly healthy unless you live in an unheated house in central
Europe and do a lot of shivering...

And it's not so much that we've adopted curry but that the Indian population
has adapted curry...

The stuff they serve in Indian Restaurants in the UK wouldn't be used to
pebble-dash a house with in Bombay...

I went to the local primary school, took piano lessons with the local
peripatetic teacher there, then auditioned for a specialist school where
I got in, and spent high school there. It was in Edinburgh- I've never
been to Finland. Composing's composing- I don't it's anything to do with
your background.

Like I said, not one of the chains. There's a Yo Sushi at the nearby
Selfridges though- I'm not that fond of them, or the conveyor-belt
places in general now- at first, they seemed a bit of a novelty.

Edinburgh, that's it, near Finland. Youre half Norwegian though, was
that it?

No, I don't know why being half Norwegian might be posh, er, mate.

If you're not posh why aint you Dave or Davy? :-)

I bet my council estate was rougher than your council estate :-)

Goodness knows, they must have been born here.

My wife, who is Indian, won't touch the stuff and neither will anyone else
we know who comes from India.

I've spent a reasonable amount of time in India and I have to say that the
food in India is an order of magnitude better than the stuff we get served
here. The food in the ordinary cafes in Bombay is far superior to anything
I've ever eaten in the UK, and yes, I have eaten in some of the better
Indian places here...

I also get to use a lot of my baggage allowance lugging spices, Kashmiri
chillies and kitchen equipment back to the UK as you can't get the quality
of spices here and getting a decent masala grinder is almost impossible.

But it's worth it...

I know a lot of Indians, some longtime friends, (though have only spent
a couple of months there) and it's not a complaint I've heard much. What
I have heard, and what I certainly agree with, is that the huge range of
cuisine which you can find in India is orthagonal to what you get in UK
Indian restaurants.

You were lucky to live on 't council estate.

We 'ad ter live in a tent in 't middle o' 't Tesco car-park. Breakfast
were past-its sell-by-date bread that 'staff chucked out into 't
rubbish-bin the night before, shat on by local pigeons and gnawed at
by 't neighbourhood grey squirrels.

You young 'uns 'ad it far too easy.
