Yesterday 340 more cases, again with 2 labs late to submit but included a higher backlog of 1,805. Positivity again fell a little to 16.3%, though tests also fell to 56.5k. A much lower 46.9k tests in progress.

The top 6 regions with 69.6% of all cases, slightly less. Elsewhere MIMAROPA added over 100 more. Re: NCR llockdown
Weekly update:
Due to an internet outage last weekend I had to compare 6 days with 7 days, so the percentage changes I found were somewhat exaggerated. Allowing for that, generally for most regions, cities and areas a significant improvement last week, though the mysterious sudden drop in testing, which the DOH observed in 14 of the 17 regions, and not yet explained, has helped. Control measures have not changed much, some restrictions have even been loosened in the NCR. A small contribution may have come from the NCR granular lockdowns. More vaccination probably played a large part and perhaps the virus is at last finding transmission generally more difficult. The OCTA NCR and national R number estimates have fallen well below 1. For regions: In all regions the rate of increase of cases was negative. Small falls in single digits: BARMM CAR Cagayan Around 30%: MIMAROPA Zamboanga The rest above 40% NCR and 4A around 50%, CL 45% In the Visayas: WV about 55%, CV 40% In the NCR all cities saw % decreases in new cases above 40% week on week. All provinces around the NCR had percentage decreases above 40%. Cavite around 45%, Laguna and Rizal 55%. All cities and areas tracked here, with the exception of Cebu City, new cases roughly constant, and Baguio, a fall in single digits, had substantial percentage decreases. Tacloban City had a small % decrease. Davao City's new cases fell by well over 40%. |
Re: NCR llockdown
Yesterday an increase to 12,159 new cases, but 3,592 were from backlog. Two labs late. Presumably backlog held up in all the IT problems. Much of the backlog seem to be from the NCR (see below). Positivity 15.9% from 53.9k tested.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...6d5ba26472.jpg Testing falling much faster than in the previous downturn... https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...baf68349b5.jpg in line with the faster positivity fall this time... But with positivity still way too high the authorities can't or won't try to find more cases. They seem content for them to present for testing. Elsewhere: Bicol doubled its cases. Davao added over 150 more. Zamboanga added over 200 more. |

The top 6 regions with a slightly smaller national share of 67.4%. Elsewhere EV added over 100 more. For the NCR and the rest of the country until Oct 31: NCR moves down to the DOH's Alert Level 3. The following GMA online news articles explain what this means: Restos now 30 and 50%, indoor, outdoor rather than 10 and 30. Indoor diners must be fully vaccinated. But having the "Safety Seal" ups the indoor % to 40. One interesting thing from this article is that gatherings in a household of members of different households still not allowed. News to me that was ever not allowed and I am sure it was not monitored if it was. https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news...31-2021/story/ Not entirely clear, but it seems cinemas are being treated like restaurants: https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news...story/?just_in Last, a list of Quarantines from ABS-CBN for the rest of the country. Re: NCR llockdown
Weekly update
New cases in the country last week showed a 20% reduction over the previous week. But the % reduction from the previous week compared to the week before was 33%. So case number improvement is slowing. So this week there many more regions, provinces and cities showing just small improvements or even cases increasing at a faster rate. Whereas in last week's update nearly all areas were showing decreases. Due to missing data from the week before last I won't give % changes (but will give figures in a week's time). Today I will just indicate the most obvious changes. Regional: Regions with a high rate of increase last week over the week before (in descending order): Bicol (very high) Zanboanga Pen W Visayas MIMAROPA Caraga Regions with a moderate % fall in new cases : Cagayan CAR Ilocos For NCR cities: Las Pinas new cases high % increase. Also in Navotas. And Pateros (but small numbers). Manila, Pasig, S Juan, Pasay, Pasig moderate % increase Large decline in new cases in Muntinlupa. Moderate decline in Makati. QC small decline. Small changes in the provinces around the NCR except for Bataan and Rizal, which both had moderate % rises. For cities: Naga and Sorsogon in Bicol both had very large % increases. In the Visayas Bacolod and IloIlo both with moderate % increases. In Mindanao Zamboanga City had a large % increase. Baguio had a moderate % fall. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...7f893450c7.jpg Apart from rising cases and hospital admissions the UK showing increasing infection in the 35-55 yrs age group (green), likely mostly infected by the young(blue) who are back to school. So good that all schools in the Philippines won't return for a while. Similar to the UK the economy here is being prioritized. But in the UK nearly all restrictions were removed a few months ago. Here a good thing is that the main ones look like being kept. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...bde4ecba56.jpg Dr John and other experts very concerned that cases are still rising going into Winter in the UK despite a high vaccination rate. While there a number of big differences between the covid situations in the UK and here we will be nowhere near 85% next year so it will not be over here in 2022. The video: |
Re: NCR llockdown
I think the problem in the Philippines now is that they been squeezing the economy for so long that the pips are starting to squeak. It's okay the populace suffering but it's now getting to the stage that the privileged classes are starting to feel the pinch, so things are starting to change, be it a good idea or not. One telling result was Duque being left out of the latest decision over the quarantine changes.

I'm sure most people in the newly designated level 3 and 2 areas won't understand them after getting used to MECQ and GCQ. If they are really piloting it the DOH would see if the public and officials understand it, But they won't check that. The public will just look to see what they can and can't do. Remember this? https://www.cnnphilippines.com/news/...ults-RITM.html The Alert levels mention the Delta variant. They haven't much idea of its extent here, but judging by experience from other countries with better testing it must be dominant here. This is from ZOE app tracking data (King's College, London). Very reliable symptom data comes from the app. ZOE data generally is usually consistent with official ONS UK data. Though the UK DOH have kept misleading symptom data from the time of the alpha variant still showing until now. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...081645b6ef.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...b71e21c07c.jpg The second list is more relevant to the vaccination situation here in the Philippines, but both lists are similar and ZOE say the order of symptoms is also similar for the unvaccinated. Both lists do not have fever as a main symptom. So temperature checks cannot be relied upon with the delta variant, giving more importance to proof of vaccination. |

There's talk of giving vaccine to the adolescents yet they are nowhere near vaccinating the vulnerable groups. My wife's 89 year old aunt living near Dumaguete has not been vaccinated and I don't think there is even a schedule yet. She just spent 6 days in hospital with suspected covid, I say suspected because to me her slow slurred speech sounded more like a minor stroke, no fever or coughing just off eating and very lethargic. They put her on 6 daily shots of remdesivir, not recommended by the WHO at 6k a shot. After 2 days the hospital refused any more until they come up with some more money. I suspect the total bill will approach 150 k. she has improved markedly but I think that is largely due to getting some food into her.

Re: NCR llockdown
Yes G. We registered months ago locally here in Upper Cavite and have heard nothing. Our subd HOA now promising soon through a neighbouring LGU.
I think many people may wrongly think the top priority groups have been already vaccinated. The government as usual not giving out much information apart from totals. But they also may see more risk to them and others in their household like Seniors from the return of kids to school, thinking that must be coming next year. I think they're right. Most Seniors here are with family, regardless of health condition. Just as well, given what happened with covid in UK and US care homes! |

Top 6 regions with 63.3% of all cases, up. https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/10/25/...nd-match-trial Had our first jabs yesterday at a school in a neighbouring LGU. Judging by the information board it seems that they had recently resumed as the latest total of vaccinations given was from late September. Was told by our subdivision it was to be AZ, but turned out to be Sinovac! One lady in our party expressed disappointment. I told her and others in the room about the "mix and match" trials, where, as you can read in the link, if OKd, you could get later next year another brand eg Az on top of two Siovacs. Unclear if it would be a booster or full dose, but I would think a full dose. Though having Sinovac is OK with me as I'm mainly after the certificate. For those of you watching Dr John, as I expected, no aspiration. |
Re: NCR llockdown
We had our flu jabs yesterday at the barangay health centre. Both me and the wife should be thinking about covid boosters soon as we had our shoots last spring in the UK. I had AZ and the wife received the Pfizer. I'm waiting to see what the recommendations are as to if we need to follow our original shots with the same vaccine booster or we can take anything available. Saying that I would stick with the mainstream vaccines. Watching Dr John I would be concerned if I'd had the single shot Johnson & John which looks to fall rapidly in effectiveness in only 2-3 months.

Re: NCR llockdown
So far JnJ only 3% of total doses which have come here, so plus the poor performance unlikely you would be offered it It would be interesting to know what went wrong with that vaccine.

Re: NCR llockdown
The usual weekend effect on testing, 4,393 cases at 8.5% positivity. Five labs late to submit. Somewhat delayed figures with a 1,395 backlog. Numbers tested 35.3k, dropping to 39.1k in process.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...c2ad10004a.jpg Samples tested falling rapidly, much more so than they did earlier this year when there was another fall in cases. Probably due to some of the backlog. CL had 230 more and 4A over100 more to give the top 3 regions just over half of national cases. The top 6 with 72.6% of all cases, up 9%. MIMAROPA in sixth place had nearly 40 more. |
Re: NCR llockdown
Over 1,000 less cases announced yesterday, one lab late and and a small backlog of 98 included. The total of 3,218 the lowest since May 23. Positives lower at 7.6% from 41k tests. In preparation 49k.

The top 6 regions with 64.9% of all cases down. Elsewhere Ilocos reported 60 more. Latest report 719 new cases and 29 deaths. According to John Hopkins Indonesia is only slightly ahead of the Philippines on fully vaccinated, 25.5%, against 24.2%. But it has administered 117M first doses against the Philippines 30M, so some advantage there. Otherwise both countries are heavily reliant on the Sinovac vaccine. So it's not clear why Indonesia has been doing so much better. Unless its the poor Philippines vaccine roll out, with its over concentration on one part of the country? |
Re: NCR llockdown
It's odd that the Philippines death rate is similar to the UK but the UK sees 5x the level of class. Is tbis indicative of poor healthcare in the Philippines compared to the UK or is someone telling fibs.

Re: NCR llockdown
Phil has more like 3 x level of total cases and of the two countries I would guess the case counts here are by far the most under estimated, so it could be less than a multiple of 3. Deaths here are also likely to be more under estimated than in the UK.
So the similar Case Fatality Rates you have seen at 1.6% UK and 1.5% Phil are likely to be about right. The large difference in the age distribution of the two populations would be the reason for the lower Phil rate and higher UK rate. If healthcare was better here the Phil CFR could be even lower and the difference from the UK greater. |

Perhaps the Philippines is starting to see the light at last.

Re: NCR llockdown
Yes Gazza, good they realise they have to vaccinate more. Given the weaker Sinovac is about half of those doses administered so far, that's another reason.
We've just come back from a local school for the National ID, but they're also doing vaccinations at last. A line of people for vaccination at 8am went about half a km down the road and was growing when we left at 9am. So around Upper Cavite it looks like they can make the higher target. But the OCTA group recently said there was significant vaccine hesitancy in VisMin. |
Re: NCR llockdown
Raffin your post showing preferred booster vaccines is very interesting. Today I received a text from the NHS asking me to book my booster shots, my wife will be due in about 3 weeks. I had Astra Zenica and my wife had Pfizer so it looks we could both have a Pfizer booster.

Re: NCR llockdown
A confusing output of covid stats for October 28 from the DOH. They've just put out an upwardly revised total of 7,313 new cases along with delayed local data, but kept up the old total of only 3,694 on an unrevised bulletin chart, which they published yesterday.
So all we can say is: Recoveries 6.7k Deaths 227 Active 49,857? But only 22 more than yesterday's figure and well over 3k more cases were later added. So a doubtful figure if the deaths number still stands. NCR ICU 41%, down 1%. Re: NCR llockdown
There's lots of cons going on in the hospitals over payment etc. My wife's aunt was in hospital and the final bill made no sense. A large part was for facilities and laboratories. We are talking 10s of ks. Well the only lab tests was a set of bloods, x-ray and swabs were paid in cash at the time. Facilities 48k ? labs 14k ? covid meds 61k totalling about 160k before senior and philhealth.
Talking to a neighbour who's mother was hospitalised non covid. The hospital wanted to admit her as a covid patient because they can then pass a bill onto the government which was something like triple the patient's initial bill. |
Re: NCR llockdown
You said 6 days stay before so 48k for "facilities" seems on the high side and 14k for blood tests also.

I've now got sight of the bill which reads like an electricity bill. Initially they wouldn't see her but had a change of heart. They wanted an initial payment of 10k then withheld treatment after a couple of days requiring further payment of 37k. Swab test and x-ray plus external pharmacy were paid independently. Only one initial blood test. Emergency Room, 1000 pesos Facilities, 48,772 pesos Laboratory, 14,963 pesos Misc, 325 pesos Pharmacy, covid meds, 60,281 pesos Room and Board, 24,000 pesos Doctors, 14,500 pesos |
