Yesterday 1,392 new cases announced with 9 labs not reporting.
From time to time the DOH changes something without explanation.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...ce52b6ca43.jpg

Previously the number tested/positive was dated the same day as the announcement, but here it is dated November 25. They started doing that yesterday.. Then I thought it must have been a mistake, but they have now done it again.. If the 1,367 positive cases are from the 1,392 announced, that would mean a 98% recent report, which is much higher than they have ever been reporting. Will just see how this goes on.
Tests done 2 days ago at 26.8k.

Top 5 locations:

More detail tomorrow.

Deaths at 27, 9 of which were RDs.
Critical at 1,411, down 4 on yesterday.

Plus Bicol 17, Illocos 8 and BARMM 7.
Note: won't continue with estimating recent cases for NCR and 4A as information now doubtful.

Large haul from Davao. Nearly 250 from Region 4A. One fifth of the nation's cases.

This WHO table looks at the change in new cases over the week Nov 15-22 compared to the previous week. The Philippines belongs to the Western Pacific group. You would have thought to S E Asia! To which Indonesia belongs.
Anyway our region showing a moderately high increase of 9%.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...b82ec01b77.jpg
The next table shows in the W Pacific region Japan had more new cases than the Philippines last week, though we have had about half of all cases in our region and the most officially recorded deaths.
But if we added Indonesia we would see over16k new cases in that week, and as you can see below that country has seen a substantial increase over the previous week:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...630594de88.jpg

Always remembering that Indonesia has 2.5 times the population but only 20% more recorded cases.
Its currently recorded deaths though are nearly double those of the Philippines.

DOH announced another 1,631 cases yesterday. Labs not reporting 10 Tests were 23.7k and there were 1,484 positives at November 26. Some doubt but that may mean that 63% were recent cases. Tests coming along 30.4k.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...9e507f10d5.jpg
More details tomorrow.

Deaths were 46 with 13 of them RDs.
To make a change 33 deaths were miss-classified and they should have been 8 recoveries and 25 still active cases!
Critical at 1,412.

More on the locations of November 26 cases:

Plus Illocos 25, Zamboanga 23, Other Mindanao 33, Bicol 17.

For NCR cities:
The top 7 were:
Caloocan 77,Manila 44, QC 36,Makati 32, Pasig 30, Valenzuala 14, Taguig 12
Couldn't get the other cities' numbers today.

Region 4A has 4 out of the top 6.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...4d58f72e20.jpg
Mankayan a mining area.
Caloocan City 77 cases yesterday and 63 today, although up to this week their new cases have been falling consistently since September. A spike or a resurgence for this city with 1.5m pop?

Laoag City in Illocos Norte (pop about 120k) has been put into MECQ from GC

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...f65b43240b.jpg

Regional spread:

For the top 6 regions (NCR, 4A, C Vis, C Luzon, W Vis, Davao) the percentage of cases fell slightly from 71.8% (figure revised upwards from Nov 23 post) to 71.4% from the weeks beginning October 29 to October 5.
Deaths were 71.6% w/c October 22 and 75.6% w/c Oct 29. Up substantially.
To be updated.

More examples of a silly mentality here to try to reduce the risk of virus transmission from extremely low levels to zero. Echoes of the motorbike divider.

The form filling and app filling required by many very spacious retail establishments. At one large DIY we gave up waiting as the screen you filled up was so small.

Expressways have introduced Autosweep RFID .If like me and many others you just want to use those roads occasionally so you will take some other route and they will become more congested.

Then I saw a report that you might need an app on your Smartphone to enter government offices! They will clarify later if hospitals included!

My solution to completing contact tracing data on forms is quite simple. I have printed small slips of paper with all the relevant information and use a mini stapler to attach same to the required form. Contamination free and quick.
I have to visit BI in Taytay next week so that should be fun crossing from MM into Rizal.

B. good idea with those forms.

Do you expect a problem crossing into Rizal? MM to Cavite and vv has been free for some weeks.

Yesterday 1,893 new cases bringing the official total now to nearly 428k. Labs not reporting 11. The DOH said that the day before there were 1,553 positives from nearly 28k tests. So a positivity rate of 5.6% . A recent percentage of at least 82. Tests coming along up at 33.4k.

Levelling off seen in both charts, slight for the NCR and more pronounced for 4A.

Possibly still some typhoon effects on infections but probably more due to festive season preparation effects.

As has just been seen in the US with Thanksgiving people here may find it difficult to moderate their celebrations ,especially with their experiences over the past 9 months. Last month it was announced that Xmas parties are prohibited in GCQ areas like Manila (it's not clear about MGCQ areas such as 4A) So far there are no announcements on restrictions about different households mixing. I don't expect any.

Re: NCR llockdown

The DOH announced yesterday over 2k new cases:
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...61df337b7c.jpg
Note the percentage of asymptomatic cases is only 7.4%. DOH daily figures are usually around 10%. US studies quote figures of up to 40% in the population. Like elsewhere they are not being found by testing.
After a number of days with the date of testing stated as one day earlier the DOH now reverting to the same day as the announcement. Let's see if this continues and will show it was just an error. If so we can say that a low 71% of positives from nearly 24k tests were recent cases.
Tests coming are at 24.7k.

Top 5 locations:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...e2e2d13649.jpg

More detail tomorrow.

Deaths at 40 with 8 RDs. Information courtesy of the Manila Bulletin. The only online news site to carry that information. The premier news sites ABS-CBN and GMA have very brief reports some days and yesterday was one of them. Rappler was consistently good but now seems to have given up. All news sites are shy of delving too much into the numbers given out by the DOH. Especially on the creeping up of the covid death rate here, and the 1k or so miss-classified recovery deaths.

Yesterday was a mass recovery day, with 10,6k announced.

Active cases 22,967, down from 24.2k a week ago.
Critical 1,401. Up 19 on yesterday.

More location detail on November 28 cases:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...5fc5b4cd56.jpg
Plus: MIMORPA 28, Other Mindanao 46, Cagayan 10

For NCR cities:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...6b15680d7c.jpg

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...13d7e418ca.jpg

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...9548428320.jpg
Again a large number of cases from Davao followed by smaller numbers in four NCR cities. Then a wide provincial spread of places with less than 40 cases.

Last week:

Slightly more cases than the week before: 10,943 compared with 10,543.
The R number just under the magic 1.0 at 0.99. For the NCR at 0,97. Both of these estimates too close to 1.0 to be complacent.

It seems that despite all the restrictions over the last 9 months the outbreak here is not yet close to being under control. And as has been seen in other countries there is a good chance of the recent levelling of cases turning up into another wave. This time also affecting a number of areas outside of the NCR epicenter.

Latest new cases chart by date of onset for the NCR (ignore the trend line):

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...9509aae9a3.jpg

For Region 4A:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...594ff568de.jpg
Levelling pronounced for both regions.

Davao City still on the rise:

Their leaders always asking that same question .Kho menie?, Kha menei?

Like many authoritarian regimes around the world they've likely greatly unreported the virus. China famously did at first then was forced to report only after it had spread abroad. from Wuhan .to the Philippines amongst other countries.

Iran high death rate at 5%, Like here a low testing rate at 73k per million.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...8f1ad4e3eb.jpg
From the BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51235105

Indications of under reporting are low testing and country-wide spread despite lockdowns and travel restrictions. Why are there hotpots here now in Mindanao?

Excess death studies would show it eventually but these types of regimes do not encourage them.

Yesterday 1,773 new cases with 11 labs not reporting. The DOH now back to the 29th when they report 959 positives out of 18.5k tests done, a 5.2% positive rate. Finally DOH figures for the pandemic here by month:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...fd880b56a2.jpg

Low testing in the early months leading to low case figures.
Deaths following cases with a lag.

So cases now only a few thousand less than they were back in July. After which economic re-opening brought much higher figures for 3 months. Could happen again over the next few months aided by public fatigue with restrictions, festive season, regional spread and lowered testing. On the plus side there is more knowledge about how to combat the virus in Philippine conditions and some improvements in treatment. Although some smaller regional hospitals may become too full and may not be able to implement them.

I also wonder about the DOH seeming to be a touch complacent with vaccines on the horizon.

ABS-CBN to their credit have produced and published this assessment of where the country is with covid now, Pity It won't reach the mainstream media.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...08a71d4edb.jpg
Recoveries dominate..the Philippines has a young population, stronger immune systems, but long term effects are a concern and not yet fully understood.
The line of deaths does not look significant, but we have a relatively high case fatality rate here .A high proportion of deaths due to many not being admitted to hospital for treatment:

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/134573...ospitals-duque

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...b9a7315f9c.jpg
Testing very erratic, weather events and disputes explain some of that. A downward trend lately.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...44177b69c5.jpg
Testing can be done in different regions from the region of residence, but the extent of dominance of Manila testing surprised me. It is still the main epicenter but as half the country's population is elsewhere testing seems to be much too low in those presently less affected regions.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...b3bd4af437.jpg
The labs not where the positivity rates are highest either have small capacity or are just not able to be easily used?

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...12e889ac4d.jpg
Two regions..Cagayan Valley and Davao in the danger zone of ICU beds and vacancies.
Many regions with small numbers of beds.

So while cases for the whole country have been on a welcome downward trend flareups in some regions, which have too low testing given their higher positivity and poor health facilities, are a worry.
The virus is not beaten in the NCR either, it is still the epicenter and capable of spikes or a second wave.

Seems that less humidity makes it more difficult for our noses to clear viruses so maybe it will aid transmission, but studies are difficult to do, as this interesting review of research done so far explains:

Re: NCR llockdown

Mask plus full face shield now needed everywhere "public" in the country! Looks like a panic measure. Don't think it will do anything much to reduce transmission of the virus and I'm sure the experts know that. An anti poor measure also as many people walk along the streets with their shields up to make it comfortable in the heat. There is plenty of evidence that the IATF is mainly a rubber stamp for the government. The D of Transport recently pushed through their ill thought cashless tollway request as an anti virus measure.

The government sees the figures for areas like the NCR and desperately wants to avoid a new wave. But it was warned months ago about the risk of that in the traditionally long build up to Xmas here but still claimed great progress against the virus and reduced testing, even when positivity rates were not low enough in many areas for long enough.

What they could have done was to limit household mixing in some way, following many countries abroad. They have already exhorted people to do that. Yes, it would be difficult to enforce and it's too late now, But even if only a minority followed it would surely do more ,as an indoor measure ,to limit virus transmission than this latest shield ordinance?

Maybe the discussion went along the lines that we can't be seen on cell phone video going into people's houses, whereas we can send enforcers along the streets to catch violators.

All I can add to the latest post by Raffin is that when I went on to my trouble free visit to BI Taytay the transit through Cainta was enlightening. Why enlightening? I observed with a degree of horror the number of people not wearing facemasks. So whatever the IATF says is not being taken too seriously in some areas. I wonder what the true situation regarding transmission rates is in the more remote provinces.

Yes, I'm sure that's a reason infections are spreading quickly in some areas away from the 6 or so main established "epicenters".

Around here in a semi provincial area near Tagaytay mask wearing seems to be well observed and many face shields are to be seen.

Like many things here a lot depends on the Mayor/vice Mayor in charge. Our area has had just a few cases but we delayed returning here from Manila as the local Mayor up to mid October was imposing more restrictions on movement than we were under in Manila. Especially for over 60s. One day a week for going to the fresh market and only allowing you to go to one designated supermarket. You even had to get a special pass to visit the small town with banks, pharmacies etc 8 kms away. Those in charge in our subdivision, 6 kms from the Municipio decided to play along. With the result that even now we need a mask to walk around its sparsely populated windy streets. Will we now need a face shield too?

What about tourist areas like Tagaytay, where there are streets with souvenir shops? Not very enjoyable for visitors. Also beaches? Aren't they public.?

Doesn't also make sense to impose this everywhere, regardless of Quarantine status.

Happy holidays to one and all.
