fa cup, 9 seasons without a win, then another 5, then 3 more, hardly consistent. luck of the cup? 19yrs no league. are we really counting charity shield and coca cola/league cup? i thought these were generally acknowledged as show piece/2nd string team affairs. which leaves us with basically a fantastic european year, 8yrs ago, and a lucky win 4yrs ago. well done. |

Yes the Liverpool Reds have be successful in cup competitions and Benitez has moved you forward but that still doesn't make up for the fact that its been a long long time since you won the league which is the true indicator of the best club in the country. The fact is we hired Houllier who decided that no player he inherited was good enough (the likes of Fowler & Mcmanaman). So he went out and purchased an entire new team, with which he bought some real talent like big Sami. But if they had just given Evans the money then we were already in good shape back then we just needed another one or two players and we could have threatened a lot more. The 90's for Liverpool was not the best time but lets face it there has not been any point where Liverpool were seen as an average team the lowest we finished was 5th under Benitez and Houllier I believe. The rest of the time we were in the top four. |

Grow up.
i think the real issue is and always will be liverpool and man u are intense rivals, some can rib others about it, take it and give it back. others can't. |

Don't why you lot are sniping with eachother, think of poor Novo, he may never see his side win anything in his lifetime. :)

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
I dont think squad for squad Liverpool can match Man U. Man Us economic might and SAFs force of personality has allowed them to assemble a fantastically tallented and deep squad with cover across the board and strenth to compete on all fronts. 1st XI vs 1st XI they are very close now, but over a season that depth will tell.
But, I cant see too much room for improvement at old trafford, and SAF will be retiring soon which will no doubt make a difference. Liverpool are good and getting better, have a youngish manager with a job to finish and the control now to do as he wants. The next few years are going to make interesting watching as long as the edifice of debt that both clubs are constructed on doesnt come crashing down, and that could be a real possibility. Man U need to find £400M in interest and finance payments in the next few years, Liverpool not as much, but still significant amounts. Something will have to give. TBH the job of taking over from Fergusson when he goes could be just as much a poisoned challace as the England job. Wonder what the odds on a return from steve maclaren are:) |

Seems a reasonable question? I support Liverpool because thats where I lived at the time I first got interested in footy, although it could have been Tranmere I suppose. I find it intriguing how many people seem to have to travel further for a man U home game than an away one, although I don't pretend to understand the significance. My suspicion is that like Newcastle, Liverpool would still get 30, 40k plus to watch them play if they went down, but that Man U might not have quite the same level of red to the bone support? Could be wrong though. |

Jeepers, its so funny when a real football fan of a real football team reads so much trash by plastic fans.:rofl::rofl: My dad's bigger than yours..:rofl::rofl: Personally I would love to wind back time to 20 years ago, when there was competition, instead of the Sky 'moneycow' inspired trash we see nowadays. I remember ManUre in Division 2!! as were Newcastle and Chelski, Man City in Division 3, Wolves in Division 4!! I see they are playing their 'money grabbing protectionism' games again now too!! Seeing Leeds 2007 drop to the 3rd Division, weighted down with debts from the failure of getting the TV money they gambled everything on. With City gaining an endless pocket like Chelski one of the 'big' 4 will lose out and that will mean a long sharp fall, so the creation of an 'invitation only' Premier 2 will effectively close that trap door. As if we cannot see what they are doing!!! ManUre was the driving force for the Premiership, for that I will hate them with fury til the end of time, even when they have gone bust. Even before they stole all the money they always an advantage over the smaller clubs, but they just couldn't stand the likes of Ipswich etc occasionally winning and taking some cash from them. The Premiership and the Champions League effectively ended the dreams of thousands and thousands of real supporters, dreams of minor success, to get that management team that would give us some success before being courted by a bigger team. And now all you plastic fans argue about who stole the most from the rest of us!!! |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
I bet us unreal fans pay waaaaay more to follow our plastic teams in the flesh.
He makes a valid point about the way TV money has altered the landscape, but sadly its lost in the vitreol. However, to argue the standard of the game was better 20 years ago is lunacy. The game now is so much faster and generally skills are on a different plane. Much as I enjoy watching Hanson Dalgleish Barnes and Beardsley stroking the ball around into the net while Souness and Case stamp on anyone that has the temerity to take the ball for the opposition, they would be blown off the park by the pace and general skill on display now...not that they would not have adapted and excelled, but its a different style from a bygone age |

right, i'm off to watch the mighty reds trounce ARSEnal. if we fail i'm sure i will suffer ritual humiliation and abuse from all the 'real' fans out there.
obviously needs one of my predictions. we will start strong, but so will they, early goals from each side, probably ARSEnal first. 1-1 half time. start of 2nd half same as first, more goals, now it gets difficult to predict. 2-2 full time, utd win on agg. |
