Help ma boab! Sorry Novo, you'll have to look a bit further North to find my team, who are, as usual, hiding their talents very nicely at the moment. (I'm a long-suffering Dundee United supporter.)
About 40 years ago I hitched from Newcastle to Dundee to watch a Fairs Cup game. I was nowhere near making it in time but fortunately was draped in my barcode scarf, so I got picked up by a bus full of supporters (who'd paid good money I suppose), and I made it through the turnstiles just in time for the kickoff. For the life of me though, I can't remember the result. |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Under the Headline:
Messiah vs the Wise man goes to extra time. Speculation was rife on Wednesday evening that one of the major obstacles to Kevin Keegan remaining in charge of Newcastle United could soon be removed - with the departure of Dennis Wise from the club. nufc.com And... Newcastle United Football Club can confirm that discussions are ongoing between the Board and Kevin Keegan. Both the Club and Kevin would like to reiterate that Kevin remains as manager. He has not resigned nor has he been sacked, as has been confirmed in respective statements made by Kevin and Newcastle United Football Club. Statement released by the Toon this morning. Edge of your seats, aren't you? |

I'm sick of BBC World / BBC Radio 4 using the stupid phrase though. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that trite apologia in the last 2 months, I could buy the Toon mesel' and buggar Ashley and Wise. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
So he has gone then.
Names being quoted for the job are: Dennis Wise - 5/2 Alan Shearer - 8/1 Houllier, Deschamps, Comacho - 10/1 Ranieri, Jol - 16/1 Can't see anyone on that list taking it, bar one. My money's on Shearer. The support structure of Wise & Jiminez that Keegan so disliked was surely assembled for Shearer... |

One Lees fan emailed me yesterday and said that if Wise ended up being sacked he was going to personally blow up every bridge over the Tees just to try and stop him from getting anywhere near Elland Road again. |

I see Paolo di Canio has declared his interest in managing West Ham, following Curbishley's resignation.
And all the funny business at Man City - what an incredible week in the EPL!!! You couldn't make it up. |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Update: I've just spent 5 days in Toon and you wouldn't believe the intensity of the hatred for Mike Ashley and Dennis Wise on the streets, in the pubs and in the local press.
There's a well organized boycott on Ashley's sporting goods chain, and a large number of folk have stopped their direct debit so that their 3 year season ticket deal will be cancelled. I think we can be quite sure that Ashley would be ill-advised to watch any more matches from the terraces among the fans... indeed to ever show up at St. James's again. To quote Mr. Morrison "This the End, the End". Or, in a similar vein, "The Horror, the Horror". The Messiah will return. (But not until there's new owners). |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
From today's bulletin at nufc.com...
May we suggest that anyone with strong views and opinions takes themselves to SJP on Saturday and vents those - they'll find plenty of others doing that and plenty of lenses and microphones to capture the goings-on. Specific demonstrations are being planned for Saturday and we'll bring you news of those as that day draws nearer. Supporting the team remains at the heart of this for us and most of you - that's why we aren't advocating a boycott of games. However we fully support calls for the boycotting of club merchandise sales and SJP food and drink outlets including Shearer's Bar. On a wider scale, we also support calls to boycott other businesses owned by Mike Ashley, including Sports Direct and Lillywhites, plus numerous other companies and brands under the Sports Direct banner listed here. And to those who have already walked away in disgust from the club over the whole affair, we understand and sympathise with your views. Ouch. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Wow, Im shocked....
There is a "Shearers Bar", and people normally want to drink there? Hopefully its more interesting than the heroic namesake. God love NUFC. If it werent for them liverpool would be the worst run club in the premiership (maybe... there is a lot of competition for that title I suppose) |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Mike Ashley is likely going to offload the club to anyone who'll will take it and give him a near-sensible price for it... and until then no sane manager is going to go near the place.
So, sometime in the near future, new owners come in, and look for a new manager... surely not The Third Coming of KK?? |

In my post above, I said that "no sane manager" is going to be interested in the NU job as things stands at present.
Yesterday BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme were tipping Gordon Strachan as a contender...:rofl: |

Attractive as that idea may be (;)), Novo, I'd be concerned that if 50,000 Geordies can turn on a big, fat, team-shirt-wearing, beer-guzzling Geordie millionaire-benefactor, then I don't think I'd last very long. Unless I brought in Jimmy Nail as manager, with Jimmy Five-Bellies as Director of Football, and put Paul Gascoigne in charge of Shearer's Bar. |

QUOTE] No, no, no. The idea is that we get all of those 50,000 Geordies to be co-owners too. I reckon 200 mil pounds should do the trick nicely, that's only about C$ 8000 each. Just about what hockey idiots in Toronto paid for their seat licences at the AC centre. No sweat. Let's do it. |

An Indian consortium is looking to take over Newcastle... |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Seriously Novo, do NUFC have a Supporter's Trust?
My team, Dundee United, have a Supporter's Trust called ArabTrust (Dundee United fans are called Arabs). The Trust has a seat on the Board, and now owns about 10% of the Club shares, and it also has first option on any available shares. It's funded by memberships, fundraising and donations. Baiscally, your suggestion is an extended version of that scheme. I honestly do think that if any club in the UK could do it, it would be Newcastle. That's because your fans are really obsessed with the club and with its perceived sense of community. Trouble is, how do you persuade 50,000 Geordies to cough up 4 grand each, and then buy a season ticket on top of that? |

You clearly have a pretty good feeling for what makes the Toon Army tick though. It's so much more than just a fan base. The Geordie Nation has a much clearer and prouder sense of unique identity than, say, Canada has. :D Watch this space. |

Latest: Ashley puts the Toon up for sale.
"You want me out", says he to the fans. Well, doh! It's just about 50 years since my dad first took me to stand in the Leazes End, but I've never been so, what?, embarrassed? by the club in all that time. Win or lose. Nouveau riche Russians need not apply. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Joe Kinnear gets the top job then.
Would do a good job but unfortunately he will be gone as soon as Ashley sells Ps Chelsea won again:thumbup::thumbup: |
