Why do some people and all the media say Happy Holidays?

Should it not be Merry Holidays, or even dare I say it, Merry Christmas.

In fact, what if people are working over Christmas is that not rubbing it in their faces, ha ha I am on a happy holiday and u have to work. Maybe teachers could say happy holidays to all their neighbors and friends in summer see how well that goes down.

It is the PC brigade gone mad. I say Merry Christmas to people and if that offends them in my mind they are overly sensitive.

FYI...your spelling shows you have become one with 'Murica :):)

They do it to offend bigoted people who insist that their holiday greeting is the only holiday greeting. Personally, I say Merry Christmas, but I'm good with Happy Diwali, Happy Hanukah, Happy Chinese New Year, Happy Festival of the Spoons, Happy, or Merry, or Mirthful, Anything You Like.

We had a festivus tree one year, or festivus stick, or whatever the non-gendered, culturally non-specific name for it was then or is now. I felt a bit guilty about appropriating the heritage of the Seinfeldians.

It is PC gorn mad. If you are going to go all Richard Littlejohn at least spell it in Estuary. Anyone who chooses to be offended because they are wished Happy Holidays is too precious for words. They deserve and annual subscription to the Daily Mail as their Holiday gift.

I am not offended, just why Holidays. We have holidays all year round and no one says it when it's an actual bank holiday. Why not merry Jesus day, or happy giving day, but Holidays well that's just F@@ked up as not everyone is on a holiday.

Happy Jesus Day sounds better than Merry Jesus Day, sort of rolls off the tongue.
Besides, it could get confused with Mary Jesus Day.

If you don't drink alcohol and always refuse it, how does one "unintentionally consume" enough to be over the legal limit for driving.

I'm sure there must be a logical explanation but for a top professional athlete who has to be extremely careful about diet and anything else in their system and for whom the effects might be more noticeable, I'm a little suspicious as to whether unintentionally means an accident, something underhand or they just simply lapsed and accepted something they "always refuse"

It somewhat amuses me that the people in our office handling our Xmas card list and mailing are not Christians.

One is a devout Muslim. The other is Hindi.

Even they refer to it as the Xmas card list.

For 15 years ours was done by a Jew. I suppose less than a quarter of the recipients are even nominally Christian. Still an effort is made to order proper "Merry Christmas" cards.

If I still sent such things personally, which I don't, I'd be tempted to buy them from Private Eye or the Daily Mash.

I noticed on our company diary that the Xmas party is coming up. It will be karaoke and people are encouraged to wear Xmas sweaters. All I can say is: "thank fork I live thousands of miles away from London".

My missus has her office party coming up. It's also sweater-themed. She bought one yesterday. When I saw it, I used two words. The first was "Holy". The second was unprintable.

At Wal Mart today the 2 people in front of me had 3 carts of milk. Almost $300.

The cashier wasn't happy as it was the 20 item or less line.

Using a walker to get to the toilet was the best she could do the day after. Monday she made it just outside the room door and back again.

Today her arm hurt through using it in a way she normally doesn't (the walker) and a crutch was a non starter.

But they let her out today, which was a bit surprising. But I guess she's no worse at home than in a room with nothing to see but a wall and a curtain between her and the next bed. The room mate had the blinds down mostly too.

Everything she needs is all on one floor so she doesn't have to go upstairs but it was a struggle to get her up the front steps. We managed using a wheelchair. Although I did pull something in my back.

Hopefully I'll be able to move tomorrow. It won't be so easy hiding it if I can't move.

It would appear he was double the drink drive limit and claimed that he accidentally drank a jug of Diet Coke which had brandy in.

Yeah, right.

It doesn't say much for the brandy that he didn't notice it.

I'll bet the dog used to eat his homework.

Of ffs people, cards, media, whatever have been saying "seasons greetings" for donkeys years. Christmas,New Years, Hanukkah. It's inclusive.
So climb down from your bigoted view point why don't you? Unless of course that you only want to send good wishes to Christians. But then that wouldn't be very Christian would it.

No, Christmas is all about good will toward men, (sorry women but you know you're in there too), and a damned fine excuse to get the goodies out. It's Easter when they get a bit shirty about it.

Huff post puts us straight on this, it's a business decision

A simple ‘Happy Holiday’ is not at all an insult or a denigration of Christmas, or any other tradition. It is an appropriate and inclusive salutation that recognizes that there are many ways that people are observing the season and you don’t know enough to be specific.

That is the very reason that many stores use Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas, because they want to be inclusive and welcome as many dollars, ahem, people, into their stores as possible. So, using Happy Holidays is not anti-Christmas, it is pro-business, and we don’t want to be anti-business do we?

My stepdaughter works at HomeSense and their policy is Happy Holidays - and on the phone, Season's Greetings - and she has customers complaining about how it should be Christmas.

Oddly enough one would expect CBC Radio to use the "inclusive" version but they routinely say Happy or Merry Christmas.

That could, of course, just be humble Maritimers on there.

Annoyed when told to just make more money.

As if making more money is so simple as those folks want to make it seem.

Or just find a cheaper place to rent when one is already renting on the very low end of the rental rates. Not as simple as finding a cheaper place if none exist.

Start watching the Oliver Daily News (ODN) Free Classifieds for jobs and rentals, things are a bit cheaper. When you see a good job there will be no rental available because they don't want pets so you'll have to post your own ad. "Wanted, rental for couple with well behaved wiener dog." Gives you Penticton to Osoyoos commuting range. Downside is a few weeks of very hot temps in summer but these days you could get that almost anywhere.

I liked this advert!
HELP WANTED – CARETAKER COUPLE
A part-time physically fit RESIDENT CARETAKER COUPLE is required to live onsite in a 1930’s cozy character farmhouse. This private 5-acre property is located in the South Okanagan, Oliver, BC. Currently, the organic vineyard is currently being managed; the requirements are for a caretaker couple only to perform grounds maintenance, landscaping, and other duties. Vineyard experience would be an asset but is not required.

I thought you hurt your back loading planes, is that better? If that isn't an issue it opens up fields like warehousing, delivery, and light industrial. The agricultural jobs are almost all hard labour for low wages, and seasonal.
People who haven't had to look for a job or a place to live for a long time can lose sight of how hard it can be, and how disheartening it is not to get one you want.

All new police officers in England and Wales to have degrees - BBC News

All new police officers in England and Wales will have to be educated to degree level from 2020, the College of Policing has announced.

There will be three options at entry level:

â– A three-year police constable degree apprenticeship paid for by the force, allowing individuals to "earn while they learn" - spending 80% of their time on the frontline, and the rest completing their degree while receiving a salary
â– A practical policing degree, as seen in other professions, where the student would complete a three-year self-funded course and apply for a job once qualified
â– For graduates, a six-month postgraduate conversion course funded by the police

I was always under the impression that the point of universities was about the most intellectually able who have proved their ability. Lowering grades isn't going to do it-grants might help though!

did you read all the nonsense how the lowering of a pass in A level one can get an A level with a 40% pass mark [E grade pass]

So, the disadvantaged can make a claim ....'look I have five A lelvels, all with 40-50% pass mark, so let me into the university course program'

A levels are A levels & I'm sure the A level certificate does not show the marks or grade

Bunch of dummies

Even worse is lowering the pass mark to 34% for higher maths

Here in Canada the pass is 50% last time I checked, yet the high schools routinely hand out 90% + grades like candy. My son, here in Ottawa, is in the 'gifted' program and routinely gets 90 + final marks with what appears to me to be the minimal of effort. Thankfully, he has a thirst for knowledge so expands his brain capacity outside of the formal classroom.

Our daughter, finished high school with I think about an 83% average, went to university in Toronto got marks in the high 70's in the 1st 2 years and is now in France doing a year of university. Reality has sunk in and her marks have dropped yet she is putting in much more time and effort in her studies. Hopefully, that will have long term benefits when she comes back. In France it seems the university professors don't mollycoddle the students and truth be told treat the students with disdain a lot of the time.

I'm in agreement the earlier poster in that university should be for the most intellectually able to prove their ability etc and lowering the standards won't help in any way. For many, a formal university education is not the answer. Community college or an apprentiship is a much better option yet many have been programmed to believe that university is the only way to go.

That rings true. I spent two years at a Grande Ecole (ESC Reims). The marking on exams was brutal.

One exam (statistics) lasted for three hours and the final answer was a number to a couple of decimal places. There were no points for the working. You either got 100% or zero.

Ditto a law exam that required you to cite a part of the Code Commercial. One missing comma was all it took for you to get zero points.

The profs were not gentle.

They only time they lost was when they tried to schedule an exam for the afternoon of Xmas Eve. None of us would have been able to get home for Xmas, so we rebelled. The Exam was rescheduled.
