Three of the four examples in my small pic appear to include a pie and two pasties (with the crusty handle on Cornish pasties for miners) while the pics in the article you linked to have tacos and spring rolls (sprolls) with Buffalo chicken, potato, shrimp. Sensations by Compliments Hand-Dee-Pies in Pulled Pork, Classic-Style Chicken, Braised Beef and Ultimate Veggie I'm going to Sobeys soon so hopefully I can see what they are. |

Two piddling pies/pasties so light you'd have to question whether there was even one in the box. $6.49 and the filling became somewhat irrelevant. |

First conundrum of the the day. Does one attempt to make marzipan for the first time while being extremely hungover or does one down two Tylenol and codeines and a large can of Colt 45 and wait until its lunchtime?

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Ran out of PC's Gourmet West Coast Dark Roast on Tuesday. I thought I still had a tin :o
Yesterday I had to cut open some Maxwell House Dark Roast pods that I wanted to try but I had failed to notice they were not K-Cup size. I really should have known they'd be too weak :( Even though they only made up the missing third. Fortunately Superstore were flogging them for $7.99 from today so stepdaughter picked up a couple for me. Ah, bliss. http://writm.com/wp-content/uploads/..._rotator-1.jpg |

My $300 pre Christmas/stock up after vacation shop was reduced to $10 when I used the points I collected this year. Woo-hoo!

20,000 gallon aquarium, apparently largest private aquarium in North America. $1,200 electric bill per month for the aquarium, seems he built/designed it himself.

Bad and good in the world
I know that there are people who could claim cultural differences but I personally cannot excuse animal cruelty in any way. Good on you people of Montreal  Saved from dog meat festival, 37 dogs en route to Montreal - Montreal - CBC News |

Nice to see great Christmas cheer on the forum. I eat meat, I am careful where I buy it, maybe you feel that I am being naive, that is your prerogative, tbh I don't give two hoots but if you think that the way the dogs are "stored" and then inhumanely despatched is fine then you are pretty screwed up.
I get it that you are embittered about the Brexit vote but does it have to be brought into so many posts? Merry Christmas. |

Merry Christmas. When I visited China, whilst living in Hong Kong, I was taken to what I thought was a pet store. It wasn't. It was a live meat store. Monkeys, cats, dogs.. you name it, it was there (including rats). Walking through the market, there were dogs (and cats) skinned and hung on hooks. They don't humanely put them to death. If they did, I wouldn't have so much of a problem. Dogs are strung up by the neck or tied up and are beaten to death, to tenderise the meat. Cats are put into vats of boiling water, skinned (while still alive) then thrown into vats of ice cold water, where they eventually drown. Pigs are put into vats of boiling water (alive) to make it easier to remove the bristles. (I used to live above a pig farm and hearing them scream was not pleasant). Chickens are plunged into vats of boiling water and then plucked while alive. Frogs are the same, except they skin them and dismember them while they are alive. To each their own - eat what ever you want, but at least have the humanity to prepare and kill animals without them suffering. Call me naive if you like.. but that's how I feel. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I've eaten dog & cat, in China. Not by choice, rather in an awkward situation where as one of only two foreigners at a large official banquet, I felt unable to refuse without causing offence. I didn't realise dog was dog at first - seemed like tough old pork. Cat was delicious.
And yes, visiting the local market was upsetting. When I lived on one of the outlying islands in HK, we had no need of an alarm clock. The daily pig dying (loudly) was sufficient. |

- humanely killed (so kosher is likely ok, halal probably not) - raised as a food animal (otherwise any kind of drug may have been shoved into it - especially a feature of race horses) Stolen pets sold in Asia fail on both counts, It's both wrong and stupid to eat dogs and cats at this time; if someone launches a dog farm raising them as food and captive bolting them then I won't eat them but, as Novo, suggests, that's just like pigs or cows. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
My aquarium light broke, wouldn't be so bad if it were fish only, but the plants need good light, probably end up losing all the plants, bu the fish will be fine.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Through a link on another site I found myself watching a movie on Netflix called COWSPIRACY. Interesting stuff about Animal Agriculture. If you have young children you should watch this for information on the world they and their children might Inherit. Some statistics there I don't know to be true, but if anywhere close to the truth, I'm glad I'm an old man.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
My earlier, perhaps contentious, comment wasn't about animal cruelty (which I despise), but simply about species centric emotional discrimination.
However, I, like most people, don't inquire deeply into the origin or method of dispatch of the cow, lamb, piggy or turkey that I buy. I think there's an element of cultural disparity in some of these posts. BTW the lobster was Canadian, much cheaper here than in Canada. I greatly hope it had a dignified demise. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
My initial post, # 973 was pretty clear, my issue was with the cruelty, not the cultural differences

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
US vs Canada Amazon orders.
My dad gave me a gift card on Amazon.com (I ask him to as .com is more useful) so I ordered 4 items last night at 7:45pm. Got an email today from the parcel place at 9:32am that the parcels have arrived. Not even 14 hours from ordering to delivery. Amazon doing more and more of their logistics in the US is really making them one fast and efficient service. And this was standard free shipping for ordering over $49. Wonder if we will ever see this sort of speed and efficiency in Canada? I am still waiting on my .ca order from last Wed shipped 2 day prime, Canada post so it wont arrive until Thurs or Friday based on current tracking location. |

Fastest I get anything from Amazon or anyone in Canada is 2 to 3 days if coming from Vancouver, and 7 to 10 days if coming from Montreal or Toronto. Efficiency and speed I have not found in Canada when it comes to online ordering. Sometimes UPS can get a parcel Vancouver to me in 1 day, but generally it's 2 days. |

It's just that the 14 hours appears to be from order to the timing of the email rather than actual delivery to you. "This sort of efficiency" was what I picked up on and I've had some things delivered within a couple of days of ordering and sometimes it has been the day after. Just last week on the Dear Canada Post thread, I mentioned an order made that arrived within two days from Amazon.ca Staples does next day delivery if ordered early enough in the day. Something I ordered at the beginning of December late evening was with me 2 days later. Ordered at 7:43pm on Dec 26th, arrived in Sumas, WA at 8:50am on Dec 27, I got email saying it was ready for pick up at 9:32am on Dec 27. Wife picked it up around 11:45am on Dec 27th. So from ordering last night to my wife picking it up today was approx 16 hours if I did the math correctly. So yes I didn't physically get it in 14 hours, that is the time it took from ordering to being available for pick up. Amazon tracking shows it going San Bernardino, California to Kent, WA to Sumas, WA where we picked it up. Carrier listed as Amazon logistics and I have no idea how the inner workings of Amazon logistics works but it's fast. Copy and paste from Amazon tracking. Latest update: Tuesday, Dec 27 8:50 AM Your package was delivered. Sumas, WA 4:36 AM Shipment departed from Amazon facility Kent, WASHINGTON, US 3:12 AM Shipment arrived at Amazon facility Kent, WASHINGTON, US Monday, Dec 26 9:40 PM Shipment departed from Amazon facility San Bernardino, CA, US |

CP doesn't deliver parcels to the door here, at least to apartments/condos so always adds 1-2 days before it's ready for pick up. |
