I'd keep it in storage and use it to house my cell phone.

I can do light labor. Reading a more detailed listing of that job, it would not be suitable. Not a handy fixer type.

I've applied for some order picking warehouse jobs in Langley which is about as far as a commute that is economical for the wages, but haven't heard anything. Most want experience it seems.

I apply for a lot of jobs, just don't get much in the way of interviews.

Companies don't seem to do much hiring at this time of year, so suppose it's also slow due to holidays.

People who haven't had to look for a job or a place to live for a long time can lose sight of how hard it can be, and how disheartening it is not to get one you want.

Thankfully, he has a thirst for knowledge so expands his brain capacity outside of the formal classroom.

Our daughter, finished high school with I think about an 83% average, went to university in Toronto got marks in the high 70's in the 1st 2 years and is now in France doing a year of university. Reality has sunk in and her marks have dropped yet she is putting in much more time and effort in her studies. Hopefully, that will have long term benefits when she comes back. In France it seems the university professors don't mollycoddle the students and truth be told treat the students with disdain a lot of the time.

I'm in agreement the earlier poster in that university should be for the most intellectually able to prove their ability etc and lowering the standards won't help in any way. For many, a formal university education is not the answer. Community college or an apprentiship is a much better option yet many have been programmed to believe that university is the only way to go.

50% is a passing grade in Canada?

I dunno if it's changed, but when I was in high school, 50% was fail. 60% was as low as you could go and still pass with a D- but in some classes a D- resulted in no credit towards graduation, and was a useless grade for college credit.

59 and below was Fail although teachers could choose to give an E if they felt the student tried, an E gave credit towards graduation but didn't count towards anything else like college.

60-69 was D range

70-79% was C range

80-89 was B range

90 and above was A range

I graduated at the bottom of my class, 442 out of 560 something, but average % was 72% overall. Solid low C student, but school was not easy, and not my thing, seemed no matter how I tried, I just didn't learn well.

I hear you - when I was job hunting I applied for over 200 and got an interview for 2 - and didn't get either of them. It's demoralising.

I used to keep a record of where I applied, but stopped, knowing exactly how many wasn't all that healthy.

But this time of year is always slow job posting wise, but in a way it's also helpful as next week I have a full schedule of medical appointments and procedures which would have meant not working 3 of the 5 days.

I love that some people act on trust. The first time I used my handyman, he gave me an expected price for a job I didn't see before or after (that a trusted tenant reported at the duplex many years ago) and when he reported back to me he said it was half what was expected as it came up really well (confirmed by tenant) without repainting. He and plumber have both done work and trusted me to pay within a month.

The appliance people I use always did that too but they got taken over and now policy is to pay on the spot.

My 'Mr Plow' man has been charging the same $25 a time for 4 or 5 winters now. The first one this winter I checked with him "still $25 or..?" and he said "for you, yes."

Not sure if that means he thinks I'm a senior  or that it's such a straightforward job - just push it to the end of the drive.

To be honest, it's easy money sometimes but others it takes quite a few passes. And a few times he's turned up about 11.00 at night, done it and driven off before I could catch him to pay, then returned next morning and done it again and only charged the one clearance.

The City plow passed twice in the night. Not the biggest ridge ever but quite a chunky one that would be difficult to clear even without the day's windchills around the -30 and even more so if left until tomorrow.

He just arrived, did it and I watched waiting for him to be done and he backed out and was about to drive off before I caught him by opening the door. And it's still -35.

Trust.

I've seen that a few times.
Every now and then I'm looking for an old thread and the search function on BE doesn't seem what it was before the last 'improvements' and I google an approximation of what I think the thread might be called and my BE name and others if I'm sure they posted and maybe words or expressions I think someone used. That Board Reader site often comes up instead.

The parchment is a bit faded but the grades are there (not the marks, though).

Even back in the Dark Ages, an "E" grade at 'A' level WAS a pass. One of my uni entrance offers only required 2 "E"s. It wasn't Bristol :).

I've been in Vancouver a few times when they've had heavy snow and it's a problem because the system isn't prepared for it, not enough plows, sander/salter trucks etc. One time they had a lot of workers out on overtime all weekend just trying to keep the drains clear downtown so the streets didn't flood.

One exam (statistics) lasted for three hours and the final answer was a number to a couple of decimal places. There were no points for the working. You either got 100% or zero.

Ditto a law exam that required you to cite a part of the Code Commercial. One missing comma was all it took for you to get zero points.

The profs were not gentle.

They only time they lost was when they tried to schedule an exam for the afternoon of Xmas Eve. None of us would have been able to get home for Xmas, so we rebelled. The Exam was rescheduled.

I went to school in Reims!

Just makes no real financial sense for city's in this area to invest in large amounts of equipment for snow removal, just doesn't snow enough to justify the cost.

Took Chilliwack about a week to clear the bulk of the city roads, the main roads were done within a day, the side roads longer, our road was done on day 4 after the last snow.

Lot's of over-time for city workers. Never did see any salt trucks, but I am sure they salted at least the main roads.

Steve woke up after the annual office Christmas party with a pounding
headache, cotton-mouthed and utterly unable to recall the events of
the previous evening.

After a trip to the bathroom, he made his way
downstairs, where his wife put some coffee in front of him.

"Marilyn," he moaned, "tell me what happened last night. Was it as
bad as I think?"

"Even worse," she said, her voice oozing scorn. "You made a complete
ass of yourself. You succeeded in antagonizing the entire board of
directors and you insulted the Chairman of the
company, right to his face."

"He's an asshole," Dave said. "I could piss on him."

"You did," came the reply. "And he fired you."

"Well, f*** him then" said Dave.

"I did", said Marilyn, "You're back at work on Monday ...."

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

We were supposed to be going to The Snow Queen at Moncton's main theatre tonight but mother in law's broken ankle put paid to that. I passed the tickets on to a family charity.

It was described as "cinematic in size and scope, featuring an ensemble of actors who play children, animals, queens and princes. This beautiful story is for children and adults alike, and the perfect play for the winter season!" and I had been looking forward to it.

But then a few days ago I read something that talked of minimalist set design which appears to mean almost no scenery (this was apparently a boast) and the ensemble of actors numbers 5, 4 of whom will be playing multiple roles in animal costumes.

As it was just on in Fredericton, perhaps Millie or Tangram went, I checked for reviews.

Perhaps I shouldn't pre-judge it but going by the photos here I'm not entirely sure that kids would enjoy it. I'm not even sure I would have done given my previous expectation of something cinematic in size and scope and great fun for kids and adults - of which I am both.

My memories are good. I was young and in love. It was my first ever time living in a city. I'm a country girl so maybe it was the big city lights!

I agree there are some nasty areas probably worse now than then. I lived in Croix du Sud and worked in Croix Rouge which you probably know as one of the university campuses was there.

Could be. I was at the ESC. I seem to recall it being opposite a university campus that had lecture theatres presumably designed to look like the petals of a flower but always reminded me of a collection of toilet bowls.

I still have the scar on my nose and a missing tooth owing to the crime of being English. Three French blokes took offence at the concept.
