Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Had to go to a government office this morning, still there waiting. Hopefully in before lunch break, if not they close up shop and kick everyone out, then gotta wait in line all over again.
Never understood why the entire office has to take lunch at the same time, why not stagger the breaks so the office can stay open? |

You're kidding. I mean we all know there are some Canadian practices from the past, but... Reminds me of 1984 when I went to work in an office in Caerphilly, Wales for a couple of weeks. They had a staff meeting about a new procedure whereby all the post that had to go to other offices would now go to a central point in the office and into pigeon holes. At the end of the day the post would be put into envelopes addressed to the council, other nearby offices, central office, regional office etc so that instead of paying the postage for 373 envelopes with a form in each one, it would now be just half a dozen envelopes with multiple forms in each. What?! I hear you exclaim, they weren't doing this probably decades old procedure already? |

Nope not kidding, they close promptly at 12 noon, boot everyone out, then an hour later open again. They do the same on the phone, if on hold and 4pm comes around instead of doing what private sector does and take all calls in que, they close the phone lines and hang up on you.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I bought a Trapper Hat today. A bit like this.
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...6b01392a12.jpg I had something from the UK - a thinsulate sort of cap thing with ear flaps. Good to wear under my cycle helmet but the flaps wouldn't tie down so cold air always got to my ears. It's not the most tasteful looking thing, but it's better than all those camo or check ones. And I know it's going to keep my head warmer than the other one at a bus stop or walk to the local shop. |

I am now the proud non owner of a duplex. All signed off, but I suppose all the other parties could drop dead, go insane, whatever before I bank the proceeds tomorrow.
There, that was anti-climactic wasn't it. |

I find having them in a Ziploc bag in tepid to warm water (depending on urgency) does the trick nicely. Much better than a microwave defrost.
That's exactly what I do, get as much air as you can out of the bag and if some of the meat is sticking above the water put a saucepan of water on top to weight it down. Make sure you refrigerate it as soon as it's thawed, if you aren't cooking it straight away. :) |

Congratulations Bristol! I'd been imagining all sorts:blink: Europe here you come...perhaps....
My husband has invited people to dinner at the weekend...I presently have no kitchen as we've knocked the kitchen wall down and have plaster dust in every orifice....running away from home seems a sensible option. |

So had I! My ex once started refitting (I.e. Demolished) my kitchen 2 days before overseas visitors arrived for Christmas/NY stay... I gave a 3 hour ultimatum for him to sort it out, or Else... |

I put frozen meat in a heavy cast iron skillet, and it thaws out quicker than on the counter. There was a ribbed pan advertised on television years ago for thawing meat out fast, but when tested it worked no better than a cast skillet. I thaw kippers out in the sink.

Still looking at something for between Paris and Nice...popping into Italy or Germany as part of a journey, maybe. My husband has invited people to dinner at the weekend...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I bought a huge piece of beef in Walmart this week - $16.00 odd - at $6.99 a lb. I've just made enough beef stew to last about 4 meals and still have some left over (hmm strogonoff maybe) - I couldn't fit it all in the pan. Bargain!
Now, where did I put that dumpling recipe? :) |

Beef in beer (dark or Guinness) works well. Turn it into a pie too. |

Mentals. Instead of letting people sit inside on busy days and use number system, where you take a number, wait til it's called, they make people line up outside and in winter it's not pleasent to stand 1-2 hours sometimes more in the cold. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
So I was checking to determine if FilmOn was working for me and hooked into a programme about Brits looking for a property in the country. In this case it was a couple of ExPats returning to U.K. from Asia. The properties they were shown had been very attractively renovated to high standards but something I noticed and have seen on similar programmers were comments about the size of some bathrooms. How big a bathroom does one person need. If it's got a vanity/washing bowl, a toilet, a shower/bath and room to move around how much more space is required. Personally when in a bathroom I don't appreciate anyone else being there while I do my ablutions. My bathrooms can accommodate one person comfortably and two if absolutely necessary. When growing up many people considered having a inside toilet/bathroom to be the absolute height of luxury.

It seems odd looking back to think that you could use the toilet but you'd have to go in the bathroom to wash your hands. But when we moved and everything was in the bathroom at the new house I was thinking what if you need the toilet and someone's in the bath? |
