Its a bright sunny Christmas Day afternoon in the GTA. 1c feeling like 0c. WN says snow to begin at 4:10pm. Hopefully everybody is/will be driving with no booze in them whatsoever. Let’s make it a road kill free Christmas.

It's been snowing on and off all day here, northwest of the GTA. Some driving. some drinking, no deaths so far.

Today in Kamloops we got our first snowfall of the season. About one month late.

Squamish got snow last week, so they even got snow before you did..

The forecast had a possibility of snow in Vancouver early this morning, but at least in my parts just rain, currently 4c now.

Its been very mild temperature winter so far.

Queen Victorias are again developing on our deck posts, but they are facing the opposite way to usual.

Wild ups and downs here -10 or so to +2 or so. There was lots of water everywhere and it all froze so it's very slippery and not at all safe to lead horses about.

The winter problem of always struggling with too many things to carry is back. Rubbish needs to go to the bin so you need boots and a jacket and gloves and, by the time you've put all that on, you want to make the most of going outside, so you're also carrying scraps for the chickens and the compost and those boxes that need recycling. The wind is blowing 50mph so the boxes escape and need fetching and, chasing them, you fall on the ice. On the way back you have the compost pot and the chicken scrap pot and a box of kindling and you climb out of all that clobber for the umpteenth time today and realise the wine bottles should have gone while you were going and the dog will need walking in half an hour so you should have fitted that in while you were at it. And, ****, wouldn't it just be better to be in a place that supports going outside, nevermind this "outdoor lifestyle" bollocks?

Only four more months.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Becoming cloudy before morning with 30 percent chance of rain showers or flurries. Low plus 1.

Freezing rain. Road surfaces disintegrating due to the freeze and thaw. Washboarding and many potholes. It's not safe to go anywhere in a vehicle. We do, of course.

I'm trying to teach myself not to throw my arm in the air when my feet slide from under me. I accept that falling over is part of life in Canada and I'm fine with bruised arse but it irks me that my shoulder hurts from throwing my arm out. A neighbour has invented a tractor mounted ice smasher, intended to make it safe for horses, and incidentally people, to go outside but we don't have chains for this tractor and so cannot position it solidly enough to try the gadget. Meanwhile, it's become an item of inverse snobbery not to be able to come to work because the freezing rain has jammed the car doors; being able to afford a garage is now a sign of having been here too long.

Ah, but it's a dry cold and there's such thing as bad weather; embrace the season!

An inch or so of the white stuff last night. Three weeks tomorrow I will be somewhere with palm trees.

Slide off a laneway tonight. Sheet ice base, too slippery to stand on, six inches of fresh snow on top. Curve left with steep slope to the outside. Only going 10mph so not a deep stuckage. Still a pain in the arse to have to bump the car out of the snow and back on to the road.

Only another five months of it.
