Re: In To-day's Newspapers
This is a site for British expats in India. Do any expats reading this Forum actually care about India????
Post 7303 concerning the wonderful news about the award of the Nobel Peace prize relating to both India and Pakistan is followed by two posts about a British constitution!!!! The only reply on the Indian side is from the moderator-- bakedbean (who seems a nice person and always has something pleasant to say). My previous post about Indian election results on TV led to a reply about being "only glued to the beach", "nothing in it for us". (You will have to excuse me, just having an off-thread grouse. I presume those expats who actually care about India, with all its bad and good points, apart from what they can get out of it, just don't post. ) |

A written constitution would be known as a Bill of Rights, your rights guaranteed in law.In the UK we have the dictatorship of Parliament. If parliament decided that from tomorrow all gays and any one convicted of a sexual offense should be castrated then in theory it would happen.

You are not taking into account the judicial system and you may be right in theory about Parliament being able to pass laws we do not agree with but in practice something as controversial as your example would never happen. The EU bill of rights gives all sorts of scumbags the right to take this country to the cleaners and in itself is controversial and not many of the countries that make up the EU actually abide by it word for word which the UK would. The main problem at the moment is the trade agreement the EU is working on with the US which would allow big corporations to sue our government if they did something which would affect their profits like increasing the minimum wage and also would destroy the NHS by allowing it to be taken over by big business. Have a look at the 38 degrees web site for TTIP.
UK one of the founding members after the war. It has not 'moved on' with modern events and unlikely to be updated. Theresa May has indicated that UK will withdraw from the Convention if they are in Gov. after the next election and will have a new Bill of Rights for UK. |

Many people would think a Nobel prize something special; and something to be proud about; that it was someone from the country they were 'expats' in. Surely anyone might eulogise about little Malala (Except the Taliban). I just found the complete lack of interest on the Forum profoundly sad. Back to other points; I quite admire Theresa May, not sure why PJ is against her. (I am not a staunch Conservative supporter). |

I agree, probably no need to eulogise on this site, the rest of the world are doing that.

I was more impressed by how Cyclone Hudhud was dealt with, the huge numbers of people evacuated and the relatively small loss of life than the announcement of Nobel prizes awarded.
It is not the actual prizes, but the stories of the individuals who received them. The publicity given will hopefully make them role models for others, so that children's welfare/ rights will improve in the future. |

Unfortunately it has already created a backlash of negative publicity, particularly in Pakistan.
AndyD 8-)₹ It must be a hope that she survives. She will continue to be a prime target for the Taliban. At least in India, child labour is condemned even if little has been actually done about it. It will continue unless poverty is addressed more quickly. |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
