I care about my friends but does the country care for us. The first Asian Member of Parliament in the UK was elected in the 1890s and since then we have had numerous MPs, peers and local councillors. How far do you think a European would get in India? I know there are many British Asians but why cannot there be Asian British? We do have a shared history after all! Good luck to Mr Modi but really will that effect our visas, our right to live in India and our participation in local affairs? We will see.
My OH is old enough to remember in his childhood the 'no natives' signs on the door of the tennis clubhouse where his father was allowed to play on the outside courts. There is still memory of the Raj looting of the country, the famines etc. May be now the Nehru Dynasty (supported by the British) has finally gone in a mega-landslide defeat. A new start can be made. May be you/we will get a cheaper visas and can participate in local affairs. (British Indians born in India cannot participate in local affairs, in spite of owning ancestral property and contributing tax there). Isn't good governance, the abolition of poverty of millions, ridding of corruption important also??? PS Modi had promised to get rid of all MPs with criminal cases against them, the job has been done for him!! President Obama has described this as the largest democratic election in history http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-27387439 |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
India is the only country in the long gone British Empire which still cannot get over its inferiority syndrome over being subjugated by a small island in the North Atlantic.Thats what most British people think. The truth is more complicated though.Brit bashing in India has its origins in the Muslim invasions of 800 years ago when they swept in from Afghanistan and sacked Delhi and started to build their empire in the north. It took the British and their Indian allies a 100 years to clear them out.The Nizam of Hydrabad was still there in 1947 and it was the newly created Indian Army that booted him out.Hindu ascendency was started after 1856 by the Britsh because they distrusted the Muslims, especially after The Cawnpore Massacre. The Hindus never looked back after that. Civil Service, newspapers, private schools and of course the railways came along and Indian consciousness with it as as a nation. The problem with India today is that its not got an independent press and a healthy sense of self criticism.Too often its ruled by renta mobs lead by big gobs backed with money and guns, especially the police acting for politicians on the make. Its not just corruption thats the problem. Its the Indian way to point the finger at some else if something goes wrong and the Brits are always obliging because Britain too has a problem with its past and its called guilt. But in the end you have to ask your self if Britain was so bad in the past why do so many people of Indian origin want to live in the UK and get involved in commerce and politics ?

However it was also a far more complex relationship and different in different areas of India. Away from Delhi politics. In Karwar my grand-father in law worked with the Brits, father in law an Anglophile in spite of the obvious "native" position. In general many British lecturers, teachers etc. were very much admired. I have just been staying at the house of the son of a Indian Air force officer who fought in Battle of Britain and proud of it. This is why many eagerly came to UK, they expected to be welcome-- and got a nasty shock in the 50s and 60s with the then racism---now fortunately mostly gone. The Congress party is to some extent a legacy of the British --and a 'right to rule'. We will see what happens. Modi must not fail.!!!! I can't help feeling ashamed of the reactions of above OPs first caring for visas and British getting involved locally. The problems of the millions of Indians in poverty and suffering from corruption are surely a priority. As I pointed out British Indians born in India and owning property cannot be involved in local Indian politics either. |

RofS Perhaps dual nationality for OCIs also???? (He has a lot on 'his plate' though, just:fingerscrossed: for the future) |

One of the first things he could do is set up a program educating people to use toilets and providing proper sanitation to cut down on a lot of unnecessary illness and death from dysentery hepatitis cholera and other diseases I can not think of at the moment.
One of his first speeches he spoke of "cleaning up India", he even mentioned spittng. He joked about people talking of "cleanliness next to Godliness" while spitting out their betel. (Good sign when he isn't officially installed yet!!!) |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
"Cleaning up India" could have a number of meanings . . . . the new Parliament will contain fewer Muslims than the last one and the smallest number since 1952.

We do what we can for the people we know and trust and seriously that is all we can do. |

Up to 34% Muslims voted for Modi in some states. In his manifesto he particularly stated that the particular poverty of Muslims should be addressed. He was quoting Mahatma Gandhi in his speech and I think the latter meant cleanliness literally. (Did you listen to the speeches?) |

A lengthy piece in The Guardian by Pankaj Mishra (linked by Goan Voice). It reads as knowledgeable and fairly even handed (don't give up too soon Bipat - it isn't all Modi knocking, the Congress gets its fair share as well!)

AndyD 8-)₹ Somewhat 'leftie'!!! Majority of electorate have made their choice. Have just been discussing this at length with Rels. Why the Western press are so scared of the word "nationalist", my explanations fell on 'deaf ears'. But it is puzzling why the British are encouraged to be proud of their 'nation', but Indians to be 'nationalistic' is sinister. In UK the tabloid press is Islamaphobic, but the new India government accused of probably will neglect Muslims?????? (No mention of Christians!!!). Anyway surely the new government must be an improvement for the majority of its citizens who voted for it :fingerscrossed: |
