One can look forward to more of this behaviour as the "brownshirts" of the RSS/BJP impose their standards on the rest of India. Goa is probably on the list of states needing re-education to what their brand of Hinduism demands. A Hindu version of the Taleban I believe....courtesy of The Goanvoice.

http://www.bangaloremirror.com/banga...w/30633255.cms Do you really want to continue with Congress corruption and 'dynasty' politics? The episode in Gokarna is similar to previous episode when an extremist Hindu group there targeted females (Indian) drinking alcohol. There has always been some tension in Gokarna between foreigners and local people, because of inappropriate behaviour by some in the temples and as always they blame 'all' as the same. (Gokarna primarily a pilgrim town, or was!!!). PS. there was some talk a few years ago about persuading tourists visiting Gokarna to move up to Karwar instead to relieve pressure on Gokarn. There was a resounding NO by Karwar councillors etc.---- "Don't want to become like Goa" they said and no right wing extremists active in Karwar. (At a personal level a little more like Goa might be nice!!!!!) |

....or Penguin intimidated into pulping Wendy Doniger's book 'The Hindus: An Alternative History' ? Again nothing to do with the RSS? Arundathi Roy, in her brilliantly scathing letter to Penguin, observes "what were you afraid of - what spooked you - the fascists aren't even in power yet?" The RSS of course also had no connection with MK Gandhi's assassin and his family! There has always been some tension in Gokarna between foreigners and local people... AndyD |

The RSS of course also had no connection with MK Gandhi's assassin and his family! If you read the comments at the end of the story the local people in Gokarna live off the tourists. The attack was by the police who weren't getting enough 'hafta'. Just as well they attacked 200 laid-back pot smokers, their 'light lathi charge' might have met a very different fate if it had been 200 drunk Russians! AndyD As to Gokarn, I read the comments quickly read one from a local person I may have missed some. I have previously read complaints about the cafes etc. being run by 'outsiders'. There is no dispute about the fact that Gokarn beach area has changed out of all recognition in recent years, there seems to be a sharp division between those catering for pilgrims in the town and those for the recent tourist increase. |

[QUOTE=Bipat;11138765]Isn't it a little living in the past regarding RSS influence? I am not sure they will influence Modi etc.
Living in the past indeed! The saffronization of India is proceeding apace and the intolerance that it brings is being practiced here and now. Don't muddy the waters talking about the corrupt Congress party, the alternative is turning a blind eye to the Nazi party in waiting. Hitler, too, did an awful lot for Germany and got rid of the economic mess they were in, so perhaps he was a great leader too! The Goa BJP is just as corrupt as the government they replaced, the mess in Canacona, the scams of its ministers regarding land acquisition, the corrupt police etc, so don't talk of the BJP bringing clean government to the country. The only guarantee is they will promote intolerance. This country, which was created by the British to enable the administration of their colony, should revert to the numerous princely states they were and that should put a spoke in the wheels of that party and the pending wave of intolerance waiting to swamp us. I guess that Arundhati Roy is a spoilsport and needlessly making waves about the censorship that has just taken place. Please!! |

Arundhati Roy an activist who has said some bizarre things in her time!! The Goa BJP government have not really had time to get corrupt have they?? Muddy the waters by referring to Congress?? They are actually in Government are they not, they should perhaps be thought about?? With an un-elected dynasty ruling and a puppet Prime Minister do you really want the scale of corruption to continue. The creation of Telangana is not going to create intolerance?? (There were some right-wing British politicians who admired Hitler before the war)!! There are ultra right-wing politicians in every country. One political activist that I admire greatly for her intelligence and common sense is Kiran Bedi, she is at the centre of things, I have not heard her warning of a Nazi regime in waiting. PS. Do you really believe all you have posted or are you playing 'devils advocate'? PPS. it was the VHP who brought the case against publishers of Wendy Doniger's book. Yes, they are a right wing extremist group akin to UK's BNP. |

Not sure I know what you mean about the British creation, revert to princely states are you having a joke? That would be the best thing for this country, stop the neo fascists in their tracks. This is one, huge unwieldy mess of a country that requires being regurgitated and split into the sum of its parts. The last time I looked I didn't see the local constabulary actively participating in attacking the various minority groups in the UK. The same cannot be said for some of the law enforcement agencies here., and not by a long shot. |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Correction: Further to my above post, on looking further the case against Wendy Doniger's book was brought by the Shiksha Bachao Andolan 'group' an even smaller right wing group than VHP.
Penguin settled 'out of Court'. |

AndyD http://www.penguinbooksindia.com/en/...-wendy-doniger The 'law' referred to, covers all religions not just Hindus!! Leaving aside all the controversy it has given more publicity to her book than it otherwise would have got!!! An American academic who has spent just one year in India. Now all her other books will be on Kindles!!!!! (Decided against, too expensive:D) |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
As any one here read The Hindus. an alternative history. ? I have and its quite benign and not controversial at all.I cannot understand why the Brown under panted ones in the RSS and its offshoot the Bajrand Dahl or any of those other hindutva saffron alphabet soups outfits can be upset.Remember its these crackpots who demonstrated against Indian Railways wanting to build a bridge between India and Sri Lanka because it might demolish some of Hanumans work.
God knows what its going to be like under labia lips Modi when he gets into power. Its going to be like throwing the keys into the lunatic asylum and running for the border quick. The BJP is full of opportunists who will wave the saffron flag and fill their pockets just like Congress did. Modi offers nothing for India but 5 years of bullshit. His economic miracle is just sham. He has enriched the industrialists and they are backing him to the hilt because if gets in its going to a bonanza for them. But back the book. i read it to about page 300 and gave up because its so boring and doesnt offer an alternative at all. she spouts on about The Indus Valley people and Dravidian civilisation in the south but doesnt say anything radical at all thats when i got suspicious of the Khaki headed tampons in the RSS...hm i thought not one them have even read the book because if they had they would have fallen asleep by page 50..... |

We will have to wait and see. As Congress are in the process of buying their votes (making all the illegal slum dwellers in Mumbai legal etc. The division of Andhra to get votes of the wealthy of Hyderabad etc.) They may yet be a continuing Congress 'dynasty'. At least base your opinion on reasoned argument rather than dragging in all the right wing groups and the shape of his lips!! http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/n.../1/345844.html My personal politics are probably left of centre, but at least India should have an elected leader, not a puppet Prime Minister dont you think?? As to the book -- had a taste of some of her others and yes agree, they were not an inviting 'read'!! |
