No of course not, but happenings regarding people of Pakistan or Pakistani origin often reported on this Forum.

What is 'accurate' about "some" and "many" ?
Just curious.....

Accurate in the sense of 'true' Refuting the implication that Indian, Pakistani men per se have 17th cent. attitudes towards women or that British women as a general rule are child haters.
In spite of my complaints about so many anti-Muslim posts I believe these attitudes are more common in a Muslim country such as Pakistan therefore the "many" as opposed to "some".
(I think it is also true to say that you knew what I meant.)

Its not just men from Pakistan who are lost in a time warp.I have a neighbor, a Bangladeshi, who incidentally was born in the UK but his wife was born in Bangladesh and believe it or not she is the one who will not face the reality of modern living. I have heard her time after time shouting at her 3 kids, two boys and a girl," That is not our way we do things." They exist behind closed curtains and if i go into the back yard she immediately disappears inside as if by magic ! My nickname for them is The Magic Mushrooms because they only come out at night......They are so backwards in their culture that believe it or not he actually sleeps in the front room and the rest upstairs in the bedrooms. a friend of mine explained the reason to me.Its to guard them from intruders and its his duty as a Muslim man to do this ! The last time we had hostile raiders in London N5 was during The Peasants Revolt in the 1380s. i mean there are customs and there are crackpot practices and the two of them should be in some sort of rehabilitation programe or a mental home.Even the local boys taunt her, the eldest girl, when is your father going to sell you ? They shout as she is having fag in the park....! schizophrenic existence comes to mid here in that the kids are clearly living in the modern world while the parents are lost in some medieval role playing game.

:huh::huh:
You must be imagining things ....there is nothing whatsoever in Noni;s post which alleges anything "PER SE".....
....I read Noni;s post as referring to the section of the males in such societies having such barbaric attitudes and behaviours
....so NO I hadn;t a clue what you meant, especially claiming accuracy then using the words 'some' and'many' !!

And now - in response to Prestonjohn;s more interesting post:

I have encountered many situations involving immigrants who have come to the UK... particularly from Asian countries.....who send their kids to British schools where they are exposed to the UK culture and want a part of that culture, yet the parents want the kids to remain as they would have done in the country from which they came.
One such example was when a 13 year old girl of Asian origin who told her parents she wanted to go to university. Her parents took back to their country of origin and had her "betrothed" to a 42 year old man....
......on return to the UK the girl tried to run away from home. She was rescued by police from an uncles house where she was literally shackled to a wall using chains and hooks whilst they arranged a flight to the parents home village to bring her marriage forward ! It was the girl's younger sister who raised the alarm.
The girl was born in the UK but her parents had been immigrants and in the village from whence they came girls did not go to school...and when the father was interviewed by police he stated that the only reason they were allowed to school in the UK was because the authorities forced it.

And that incident occurred in the UK within the last decade!

First part of your post:
many dictionaries give the definition of "accurate" as "correct". "All" can be incorrect, while "some" or "many" can be correct when discussing a subject without specific statistics..
I was replying to Noni 's post which disagreed with my post indicating such attitudes are not the norm in India. I interpreted her reply differently to yourself maybe Noni will clarify.

Second part of your post: yours and Prestonjohn's examples; there are Asian families of this kind, particularly I have found in the lower social groups (but not exclusively), and Bangladeshi immigrants are often very poor. Most immigrants I have encountered though are very proud of their children's achievements.
Oh dear!! is it OK to say "most"? As accurate as your "many" though:p

Off topic, (One thing that irritates me about Indian society is the almost universal use of the word "kid" for "child", a kid is a young goat, relatives seem to disagree!!!).

Spot on Dread. my point is Asian men never mind of what religion, is the way they barbarically treat the females in the family, their odes traditions kept alive in this country,
You would think if they wanted to live here, and accept a better style of life with all the benefits, they would embrace the way women were treated in society.

Noni, the point of discussion about your post and what I was asking you to clarify is whether your post indicated that you think this behaviour is a characteristic of all, most, or just 'some' "Asian" men?

Do you not perceive a difference (in general) as to what goes on In India and Pakistan as regards attitudes to women?

Don't you think your theory might be a little unsound?

Certainly there are many aspects of some Asian cultures that I wouldn't stand for, but then the same can be said of non-Asian cultures too. I'm not sure it's useful to add the "Asian" tag. In fact it weakens your argument because of the sweeping generalization involved. Why not just condemn and do something about unacceptable practices wherever they are found?

All I can say Noni that in 45 years I can only think of a couple of
servants/helpers I have met in India with such attitudes, not one other relative, friend or neighbour and I only meet local people not expats. I know that one person's experience in 'numbers' is small (although it must be in several hundreds) and that many such men exist in India and in UK but "most" I really must profoundly disagree and sad that you have this opinion.

So I'm not quite clear - who exactly is behaving in a backward or primitive way here?

Lion can't win with Bipat whatever we call them, and I certainly don't mean it in a racial way. If you call them Indians you are wrong, Asians wrong, Brown people - lets have a name which everybody feels comfortable with.
You will find all of a sudden these people become Muslims - their religion has nothing to do with it.
I certainly condemn the following and I am sure you and fair minded people will agree.

Malala and Shazia Ramzan met for the first time since they were shot
They were on a school bus on October 9 when Taliban gunmen came
Malala was shot in the head and Shazia was suffered wounds to her neck
Shazia has been granted a student visa by the UK to fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor

The attitude of men in the villages in Goa is certainly that women are the underdogs. The more affluent ones "seem" to have more of our attitude towards their women folk, although sometimes you can see through them, just the little things they say and the way in which they say it.

Indeed, but I could make an equally horrible list of crimes against women from other countries and other cultures, some of them that you would consider completely modern.

My point is that sweeping generalizations weaken the case, they do not strengthen it. This sort of behaviour towards women is not the result of ethnic or racial origin. For every example you give of an "asian" maltreating a woman, an example of a brave, gallant, noble "asian" could be found and more to the point, millions and millions of examples of perfectly normal everyday behaviour by "asians". Cherry picking the horror stories and then generalizing from them makes it more difficult to actually get that behaviour to stop, because it weakens your case and makes people stop listening because of the completely unnecessary racial element injected into it.
