You challenge someone who you allege says that 'most' do behave this way.......but equally it CANNOT be said by you that 'most' do not behave this way......unless of course you are going to claim that you personally know and can bear witness to what goes on in 'most' Indian homes....

Excuse the interruption, but you cannot ask someone to disprove a theory that has not actually been proved in the first place.

That's like saying "prove to me that God does not exist".

I just caught the last two comments so not really sure what it's all about, but I think you can disprove a theory without the need for it to be proved in the first place, as a theory is that, otherwise surely it would be a fact?!

If I know that many hundreds (well known over the years) do not behave in this way, are they likely to be unique? and if not it must be unlikely that "most" behave in this way.

all these dreadful men are the product of the upbringing by women!!
If most Indian men are so awful why the h... do you want to be an expat amongst them?

This comes up in the god argument all the time.

God is a belief, or opinion. Nobody has offered proof of his existence, though many have tried.So when you say "I'm going to believe in god because you can't prove he doesn't exist" things can get a bit absurd. I might choose to believe that we are being controlled by giant mutant ant overlords, on that basis. Go on, show me that that isn't true, hmm?

For the argument above, we are being asked to accept the idea that most Asian men are violent towards women simply because we are unable to examine the lives of every Asian man on the planet. Which is a logical fallacy.

PS: You're right, I should have worded my first post better. "Unprovable" would have been better than "unproved".

Actually we were not discussing 'theories' at all...... what was being discussed was the fact that one person says 'most do' and another says 'most do not' in relation to whether Indian men treat their women badly ....and I was merely pointing out that neither could state with any accuracy unless they personally knew most or all Indian people personally and could bear direct witness to what went on inside their homes....and with the size of the population of India I would have to shed doubt that it was possible on the part of either poster to be able to make such comment with any accuracy whatsoever.........
(but we have to tolerate (or pity) those self styled experts on India who have never set foot inside its borders......and think it;s the same a S.America...and can;t distinguish between a theory and a personal belief)

No you are not! - the comment being made is that noone on this forum can say whether most men DO or DO NOT treat their women badly.
Both sides are PERCEPTIONS.....but neither party has enough direct evidence to prove or disprove either perception.....

Why one can't discuss logic without having been to India is beyond me.

Don't really know how many, not counted. 40 years of being part of a community and vast extended family, spread over several states. Living in their houses, sharing theirs and our celebrations and tragedies I must have learnt something about Indian men 'in general' I would think? (Oh yes, also their neighbours, helpers and friends)

Suggesting that mothers have an input in their sons upbringing is "sexist"?
(I doubt the entire forum are interested!!!)
Maybe it's the usual mother's 'guilt' I always feel to blame for any of my children's faults.

(Regarding one of these males, I wish he would become computer literate, his brother has the same defect. But it means my sister in law and myself have entire control of all email communication.!!!!)
