This is really interesting. I did not know about Betim being the Jewish base in Goa but it makes a lot of sense. Strangely enough this year we had given our car into a garage in Betim for a service ( not far from the fish market) on the left hand side of the road and we had gone to pick it up as it was ready. As we got out of the taxi we looked up and there was an old house next to the small car park and this house was decorated with a lot of Stars of David around the top of the house. I can't remember the exact details right now but think they were sculpted into the outside walls which is a really unusual sight in Goa. We both thought it very rare to see this but thought no more about it at the time . Now when we go back next season I will make a point of looking more closely when we drive by.

That is interesting because i was looking at the wrong site ! Betim stretches along the banks of the mandovi for at least a mile and now that i have thought about it most of it must have been lost when they constructed the bridge and the approach roads.Between the ferry and the bridge is where i think the old settlement must have been. The Portuguese would not allow them to live in Panjim and i think most moved to Bombay or Cochin .Their descendants originally came from Babylon , not from Palestine. It was the oldest Jewish community in the world and it was established in 597bc.

You are correct that they moved. I heard a documentary on BBC radio last year which covered this subject. I understand that the Cochin community has all but died out. The last remaining individuals emigrated to Israel some years ago. However the Mumbai one still exists but is small in numbers. I met one member 5 years ago by chance on the train going up to Mumbai and have kept in touch with her. They were based in Colabar which is where the jewish Habad centre was located ( until it was bombed in the terrorist attack). Not sure if the centre is still there.

I was 16 living in Preston when The Moor murders were caught .I also remember seeing posters going up in Manchester the year before with pictures of missing children going up on lamp posts and walls. The Moors above Oldham are very wild and desolate even in Summer. There are still plane wrecks from the second world war up there.Brady is a monster who should have been bricked up in a cell and fed through a hole in the wall and left to rot. Most people my age have strong memories of what happened.Mothers terrified to let their children out to play in the streets.Today children have special areas in parks to play in but then all you had was special streets which traffic was restricted. They had large signs at the entrance warning drivers to be careful. Think they were called Play Streets too.
